Picture a Thursday, Saturday, or Sunday at The New Oroville Flea & Farmers Market…

A grandpa picks up a fishing rod from your table. His granddaughter looks up and asks, “Can we go fishing today?”

A couple stops beside the bench you built. They check a photo of their front porch and smile. “That would fit perfectly.”

A young family finds a good used washing machine within their budget. A gardener discovers your handmade planter boxes. Someone spots your toolbox and asks, “How much for the whole thing?”

Imagine heading home with more room in your garage, extra money in your pocket, or your first custom furniture order.

That’s the kind of opportunity we’re building in Oroville—for neighbors clearing out their garages, growers bringing in a harvest, makers sharing their talent, and local businesses meeting new customers.

🎣 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 $𝟰𝟯. 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗗𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗙𝗟𝗬-𝗙𝗜𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗟 𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗧 $𝟮𝟬𝟬. 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧.

Twelve-year-old Mason had spent nearly a year dreaming about fly-fishing. He watched anglers along the river, studied knot tying and practiced casting in his backyard with a stick and string.

He didn’t need the newest equipment. He only wanted 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗼 𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝗱.

Then he saw the price at the sporting-goods store: 𝗡𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗟𝗬 $𝟮𝟬𝟬.

For a twelve-year-old, it might as well have been a million dollars.

But Mason didn’t complain—and he didn’t give up.

𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞!

He washed trucks, cut grass, pulled w**ds, swept driveways and raked leaves until he had saved exactly $𝟰𝟯.

It still wasn’t enough for the reel at the store, but it was money Mason had earned himself.

The following Saturday, Mason and his father visited a local flea market just 20 minutes down the road.

They walked past vendors selling used tools, affordable clothing, collectibles, household goods, fishing tackle and garage-sale treasures. Every table offered something different, and every box held the possibility of an unexpected bargain.

Then Mason saw it.

Tucked behind an old metal tackle box was 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗳𝗹𝘆-𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲.

The metal frame was solid. The handle turned smoothly. The drag clicked perfectly. The reel showed only a few small signs of use and had clearly been well maintained.

The original store tag was still inside the case:

$𝟭𝟵𝟵.𝟵𝟵.

With his heart pounding, Mason looked at the vendor and asked, “How much?”

“𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀,” the seller answered with a smile.

Mason looked at the reel.

He looked at his father.

Then he reached into his pocket.

Eight crumpled five-dollar bills changed hands.

𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗔 𝗡𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗟𝗬 $𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗙𝗟𝗬-𝗙𝗜𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗟 𝗙𝗢𝗥 $𝟰𝟬—𝗔𝗡 𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝟴𝟬% 𝗢𝗙𝗙!

The seller explained that he had purchased the reel years earlier because he planned to learn fly-fishing. He used it only a few times before life became busy, and the reel eventually found its way into a box in his garage.

It had been sitting there ever since.

Before returning it to the case, the seller wiped it clean one final time.

“Take good care of it,” he told Mason, “and it will take good care of you.”

Mason walked through the rest of the flea market holding 𝗮𝗻 𝟴𝟬%-𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲—and a brand-new dream.

A few mornings later, Mason and his father stood beside the river before sunrise.

His first cast landed only a few feet away.

His second cast tangled.

His third cast wasn’t much better.

But Mason kept trying.

Then, as the morning sunlight stretched across the water, Mason finally sent the line sailing out in front of him.

The line tightened.

Mason held the rod steady, carefully worked his new reel and landed 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁.

𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗖𝗔𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗙𝗜𝗦𝗛—𝗕𝗨𝗧 𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗔𝗟𝗦𝗢 𝗖𝗔𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗔𝗡 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔.

That used reel was no longer an unwanted item forgotten inside someone’s garage. It had become the beginning of a new hobby, precious time between a father and son and a memory that could last a lifetime.

But Mason’s story didn’t end beside the river.

𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 $𝟰𝟬 𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗔-𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗗𝗜𝗗𝗡’𝗧 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗔 𝗣𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡—𝗜𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗗 𝗔 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔.

Mason began learning everything he could about new and used fishing equipment. He studied different rods, learned how drag systems worked and discovered how to clean and maintain used reels.

With his father’s help, he began visiting garage sales, yard sales and flea markets in search of overlooked fishing gear.

He found rods that needed cleaning, reels that needed fresh line and tackle boxes filled with useful equipment their owners no longer wanted.

Mason cleaned every item, researched its value and made certain it worked properly.

Then he returned to the flea market—but this time, he wasn’t only a bargain hunter.

𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗘𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗔 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗛 𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗨𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗔-𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗢𝗥.

His first display was simple: one folding table, several carefully cleaned fly-fishing reels, a few rods, tackle boxes, nets, lures and other fishing equipment.

Some items were gently used. Others were new. Everything was fairly priced and ready for another fishing adventure.

When Mason made his first sale, he didn’t rush out and spend the money.

𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗧.

One reel became five. A few rods became an entire rack. His folding table gradually became a complete vendor booth offering 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀, 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

During the week, Mason stayed 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗬 cutting grass, pulling w**ds and maintaining yards throughout his neighborhood.

But no matter how full his weekday schedule became, Mason looked forward to the weekends.

He couldn’t wait to wake up early, load his fishing equipment and set up at the local flea market. He loved meeting customers, sharing fishing stories and watching someone else discover the perfect rod or reel at an affordable price.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗬𝗔𝗥𝗗-𝗠𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗞𝗘𝗣𝗧 𝗛𝗜𝗠 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗞𝗘𝗣𝗧 𝗛𝗜𝗠 𝗗𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚.

Mason placed a sign at his booth advertising his grass-cutting and yard-maintenance services. He also handed out business cards to customers and nearby vendors.

People who stopped to examine a fishing rod, reel or package of artificial flies often left with Mason’s business card—and sometimes became his next lawn-care customer.

𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗔-𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗛 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗦.

After accounting for his merchandise costs, Mason averaged approximately $115 per selling day before booth rent. After subtracting his $25 space fee, he kept about $𝟵𝟬 𝗜𝗡 𝗗𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗙𝗜𝗧.

Selling two weekend days for four weeks gave him eight selling days per month:

$𝟵𝟬 × 𝟴 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 = $𝟳𝟮𝟬 𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛—𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗟𝗬 $𝟳𝟬𝟬 𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗙𝗜𝗧 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗔-𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗘.

And that $720 did not include a single dollar from Mason’s grass-cutting, w**d-removal and yard-maintenance business.

Because Mason advertised those services at his booth and handed out business cards, 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗗𝗨𝗟𝗘 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗟𝗬 𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗗 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗘𝗫𝗧𝗥𝗔 𝗝𝗢𝗕𝗦.

The flea market wasn’t simply producing weekend sales. It was introducing Mason to new customers and helping him build an entirely separate weekday income.

𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 $𝟳𝟬𝟬 𝗔 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧—𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗬𝗔𝗥𝗗-𝗠𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗪 𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗜𝗧.

But the money wasn’t the greatest thing Mason earned.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗚𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗠 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘.

He learned how to speak with customers, negotiate prices, manage money, solve problems, accept responsibility and turn a simple idea into a growing business.

Eventually, Mason expanded beyond his flea-market booth and opened a 𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗧 across town.

His store became known for some of the best used fishing equipment local anglers could find—quality rods, reels, flies and tackle that customers could 𝗦𝗘𝗘, 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗖𝗛 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗢𝗡 before buying.
