I posted this blog in 2013, after the story broke of a church congregation in Texas that had a high concentration of measles among its unvaccinated members. I have never seen a follow-up. Has anyone? “A measles outbreak in Ohio has reached 68 cases, giving the state the dubious distinction of havi...

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia (FMS) can respond extremely well to homeopathy - by Dr Angela Jones

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a common rheumatological condition characterised by chronic widespread pain and tenderness at specifically defined points. Painful stimuli are often felt very intensely(hyperalgesia) and non-painful stimuli, such as brushing, can also be felt as pain (allodynia). People with FMS often have other problems, including fatigue, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, headache, migraine, variable bowel habits and diffuse abdominal pain (irritable bowel syndrome) and urinary frequency. It is also said to be found more frequently in patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
What causes FMS?

The cause of FMS is not known. It is likely that different people diagnosed with FMS are actually suffering from the symptoms for different reasons and some of the suggestions include hyper-excitability of the central nervous system and alterations in the mechanisms for the perception of pain as well as interactions with the limbic system which governs sleep, and stress and immune regulating systems.
How common is FMS?

Estimates of how many people suffer from FMS vary. A US population study in 2006 based on health insurance data suggested one in 72 people was affected with a 62/38 split female to male. This is interesting as previous surveys suggested a much higher incidence in women but it could be that men suffering from the disease are more likely to attract a diagnostic label and treatment within the US health system.
Homeopathy & FMS

Every patient with FMS has their own story, their own constellation of symptoms, their own trigger factors, their own way of coping with the illness. In this kind of situation, the homeopathic approach comes into its own, allowing for the individualisation of a remedy or medicine to match the features displayed by the patient. As with most homeopathic treatment, the medicine may be chosen on the basis of the symptoms of the illness, or on the characteristics of the patient as a whole (constitutional prescribing), or both. Dr Tom Whitmarsh demonstrates a range of approaches in the case studies described later. What is clear is that, as always with homeopathy, the medicine must be individualised to the patient and the case in order to be successful. These are a few local remedies, which could be considered for people with FMS but be aware that they can only be expected to be helpful if the symptoms match those of the patient well.

Rhus tox: this is the rheumatism remedy par excellence and was the remedy studied by Dr Peter Fisher in the 1980s and shown to be effective in a double blind placebo-controlled trial of fibromyalgia. It is effective for pain and stiffness which is worse when having been still and gets better for getting moving, particularly bad after overdoing things or in cold damp weather, eased by warmth and moderate exercise. It is interesting to note how these match up with the conventional recommendations below!

Ruta grav: the remedy picture is similar to Rhus tox except that the stiffness is, if anything, more marked and less susceptible to improvement with gentle movement. There is often involvement of the tendons or the places where tendons meet bone (heels, elbows etc). There is often a bruised feeling. Pains are worse for cold damp weather but without the definite benefit from warmth which is seen in Rhus tox.

Rhododendron: the picture is very similar to Rhus tox except that the pains are very much worse for changes in the weather, especially if there is an impending storm or thunderstorm.

Arnica: this medicine is best known for its action on injuries to reduce bruising and swelling. However, it is useful whenever the body feels bruised and sore, especially if markedly worse after exertion. A characteristic feeling described is of “the bed feeling too hard”, in other words, soreness and bruised feeling is worse if the part is lain upon. Arnica can be a good medicine to start treatment of fibromyalgia with, if there is not a clear picture suggesting another medicine at the onset. Hopefully, after a period, a clearer picture will develop.

Causticum: again, soreness, weakness and stiffness, worse with exertion and cold, better for warm applications and being warm in bed. The unusual thing that might suggest Causticum is that the symptoms are worse in dry weather and better when it rains!

Bryonia: for Bryonia to work, the pain must be very much worse for the slightest movement (the opposite of Rhus tox). Heat will aggravate the pain and pressure on the relevant part alleviates, possibly by preventing movement. In my experience, this is a more unusual presentation for fibromyalgia.

Kalmia latifolia: this medicine is especially helpful for severe shooting pains in muscles, and there is often an accompanying numbness or cold sensation. Always make sure that there is no suggestion of nerve pressure or damage, if these symptoms are present.

Cimicifuga: this medicine is used where the pains, soreness and stiffness are mostly in the neck and upper back muscles. These may have been preceded by an injury and are generally worse for cold or drafts. Symptoms are often accompanied by headaches, especially on the top of the head or radiating up from the neck.

NOW Foods has recently learned that Senator Dick Durbin from IL has introduced a bill that we believe could be very harmful to our industry and our ability to access the many dietary supplements currently available in the marketplace. We ask that everyone who receives this Action Alert act on it immediately as it could come up for a vote as early as this evening or tomorrow. Please forward it to family, friends or any acquaintances that would be interested in helping us in this effort.

In Health,
NOW Foods Advocacy Department
ACTION ALERT: Oppose Pre-Market Approval of Supplements

Senator Mike Braun (IN) has agreed to join Senator Durbin (IL) in introducing a bill to require mandatory product registration for supplements. This bill creates new regulatory barriers and gives the FDA new authority to prevent health and wellness products from reaching millions of consumers. If it gets approved, more than 41,000 supplements could be removed from the market.

We need ALL health and wellness advocates who support the dietary supplement industry to stand with us against this radical proposal.
If we want to preserve access to the supplements we rely on to stay healthy, we must contact our elected representatives immediately and tell them to oppose pre-market approval for dietary supplements.

Denise Takes a Tumble

Denise was a 46 year-old nurse leaving work after a late shift. In the dark, she slipped on some wet grass and fell down a rocky embankment. Fortunately, others heard her screams and were quickly on the scene. A trip to the Emergency Department and a series of X-rays revealed some nasty fractures. Two ribs were broken, as was her humerus, the bone in her upper arm.

Following an overnight admission and a plaster cast to her arm, Denise was told to do lots of deep breathing, given some pain-relieving tablets and then sent home to rest. The fractures were expected to heal over a 6-week period.

Denise had used homeopathy before and knew it could help with fractures and soft tissue damage. She phoned me on the day of her discharge to ask what I would recommend. It was obvious that she was in pain and that most of it came from her fractured ribs; every movement or breath sent sharp stabbing pains into her chest. And as for those deep breathing exercises …. they were impossible.

(While it seems counter-intuitive when one has fractured ribs, deep breathing is vital if pneumonia is to be avoided. Shallow breathing encourages its development and in the elderly especially, can result in death.)

Denise was also in pain from her broken arm and other bruising but neither were as the pain from her ribs. Evenso, she was pleased to be back in the peace and quiet for her home and away from the busy-ness of the hospital. She also commented that she was very thirsty and dry in the mouth.

I prescribed three separate remedies for Denise: Arnica , Bryonia, and Symphytum. The Arnica was to be taken several times over the next 48 hours and then followed by either the Bryonia or Symphytum, depending on her symptoms. Denise was surprised that the Arnica worked every bit as well as the analgesic she had been given at the hospital. Over the next few days the bruising and swelling settled and she found it easier to sleep and move around. An added bonus was that she had none of the grogginess or constipation the other medicine caused.

Brawls, Falls and Homeopathy 3(An “Arnica state” is very much about the soft-tissue damage and bruising that accompanies an acute fracture. It goes a long way in easing these symptoms in the early days.)

After few days, Denise’s pain, swelling and bruising was much improved. It was now time for her to use one of the other remedies, Symphytum or Bryonia, depending on the symptoms troubling her. Symphytum was for general fracture pain of the arm, but if she was feeling irritable and continued to have sharp sticking pains in either her arm or ribs on movement, then she should take the Bryonia.

At first, Denise found she had to take the remedies several times a day. As healing progressed, doses were required less and less often. By the end of fortnight, only taking the occasional dose of Bryonia was needed. Denise herself, said she recovered more quickly with homeopathy than even she had expected.
Arnica montana

Brawls, Falls and Homeopathy 4Arnica treats a wide range of conditions but is best known for controlling bleeding and speeding healing of damaged tissue. The person will be restless, feel sore and beaten, and find it difficult to get comfortable. It is a useful remedy following accidents and childbirth. Homeopathic Arnica is prepared in ultra-high dilutions and while usually given orally can also be safely applied to broken skin, something that can’t be done with herbal Arnica due to its irritating effects.

When broken bones have been caused by trauma, Arnica is the first remedy of choice in the first 24-48 hours. Following this, one of the following two remedies usually produce better results.

Other conditions helped by Arnica, when symptoms match (remember the Law of Similars), include types of: abscess; angina; arthritis; stokes; concussion; dental procedures; eczema; gastritis; gout; influenza; malaria; meningitis; pneumonia; psoriasis; rheumatism; infections and sprains.
