Our Story
Located about a mile west of Otley, Iowa, Prairie Roots is its 8th season of growing USDA-Certified seasonal organic produce, primarily at the Pella Farmer's Market (Thursdays, 3:00-6:00pm) and Saturdays, beginning in May, (9:00am-noon) in the parking lot of the First Reformed Church, 603 Broadway.
Abby and Louise are grateful to Ansel Zalcberg and John-Michael Zalcberg for their vital contribution to the start-up of the farm in 2011 and its ongoing operation. They were instrumental in the success of the farm until 2016 when they graduated from high school and decided to move on.
A new CSA shares program began in 2014 with 24 subscribers in 2017. Some produce is also sold to Central College Food Service, Catering Service and to Hy-Vee.
Representative Products: salad greens, arugula, spinach, kales, heirloom potatoes, tomatoes, onions, leeks, squashes, melons, herbs, beans, peppers, garlic braids and loose garlic, and much more, varies by season.
Farm Practices: USDA-Certified Organic since 2012. Human-powered; low-carbon operation; solar-power, new high tunnel-hoop house added in 2014 to extend season early and late.
