QUICK READ about Memorial Day and Events:
Shared from another page!!
To ensure we observe this day with the dignity it deserves, we wanted to share a brief look at its history, proper etiquette, and some local events where you can pay your respects.
The History and Purpose
Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday was formalized in 1868 following the Civil War as a time to decorate the graves of the fallen with flowers. It eventually evolved to honor all American military personnel who died in the line of duty during any conflict.
It is important to note the distinction between our military holidays:
•
Armed Forces Day (May) honors those currently serving in uniform.
•
Veterans Day (November) celebrates the service of all living military veterans.
•
Memorial Day (Last Monday of May) is reserved strictly as a day of mourning and remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice and never made it home.
Proper Memorial Day Etiquette
For those who wish to observe the day traditionally, there are specific protocols that hold deep meaning within the military and veteran communities:
• The Greeting: Avoid saying Happy Memorial Day." Because it is a day of remembrance and mourning, "happy" can feel mismatched to families of the fallen. Instead, consider using phrases like, "Have a meaningful Memorial Day" or "I hope you have a peaceful weekend of remembrance."
• The Flag Protocol: If you fly the U.S. flag at your home or office, the correct protocol for this day is unique. At sunrise, raise the flag briskly to the peak for just a moment, then solemnly lower it to half staff, where it remains until exactly 12:00 PM (Noon). At noon, raise it back to full-staff for the remainder of the day, signifying that the nation's resolve lives on.
• National Moment of Remembrance: At 3:00 PM local time on Monday, a unified national pause occurs. Wherever you are, please consider taking one minute of silence to honor those who died in service to our country.
Local Commemorative Events:
If you would like to participate in a formal observance this Monday, May 25, there are several meaningful ceremonies taking place in our area:
• Sunday Ride to the Byers Lake Veterans Memorial: For those in the motorcycling community or anyone wishing to participate in or view a scenic rolling tribute, the annual Memorial Day ride up the Parks Highway will take place on Sunday, May 24.
• The Route & Service: Riders will gather and head north to the Alaska Veterans Memorial at Byers Lake (Mile 147.2, Denali State Park). A formal, outdoor remembrance service will be held at the memorial site at 1:00 PM, honoring Alaska's fallen service members against the backdrop of the Alaska Range. Itis a powerful way to connect with the local community and veterans' organizations before the traditional
Monday services.
• Fort Richardson National Cemetery Ceremony (JBER): A deeply moving and traditional midday program begins at 12:00 PM (Noon). Attendees are highly encouraged to arrive at the base gates 60 to 90 minutes early (by 10:30 AM) to clear security processing at the D Street Gate. Please bring a valid government-issued photo ID, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.
• Anchorage Remembers Ceremony (Delaney Park Strip): The Municipality of Anchorage will host its official observance starting at 9:30 AM at the Veterans Memorial downtown (1 St. & 9th Ave). This outdoor event features patriotic music, guest speakers, and a formal wreath-laying ceremony against the backdrop of the Chugach Mountains.
Local Fellowship: Wasilla will hold the following events in honor of Memorial Day
• 10:30 AM The Walk of Honor: Attendees gather at the Mat-Su Veterans Wall of Honor (located in front of the Wasilla Police Department headquarters at 801N. Wasilla-Fishhook Rd.) for a commemorative walk to the nearby Wasilla Aurora Cemetery.

However you choose to spend your weekend, I wish you a safe, peaceful, and meaningful time
ection.
