Our Little Red Farm dairy cows are out on fresh pasture now! We rotationally graze them throughout the summer. Please keep in mind this means you milk may taste a little different than it does during the colder months when they are only eating alfalfa hay .

During the summer cream typically has less butterfat , the color may be more golden, and the flavor profile may be stronger or change because their diet is fluctuating. That's the beauty of grass fed milk! Foraging through the pasture on different plants means a variety of nutrients for both the cows, the milk and you!

We rotationally graze our cattle during the summer and they know the exact routine! They will follow for Kyle up and down the fence line just waiting for him to move it to see who can get the best level of grass first. It’s not because they’re starving – they have free choice premium dairy quality, alfalfa hay at all times, but it’s kind of like when your kids get to go play outside and they run out there every night even though they play out there the night before and they know they’ll play the night after.

It never gets old to see how excited the cows are to be back on pasture in the summer!

They always seem to race each other to get the best nibbles of grass. And while it looks like they’re all fighting over food, they are just really excited. In about an hour or so of grazing, everybody will settle down to take naps and chew their cud. They do have 24 seven access to alfalfa hay as well and then at milking they get one scoop of grain, which is less than 10% of their diet.

Our farm is unique in that we only milk our dairy cows one time per day. It reduces our production by about 30% but it also technically boosts nutritional quality, puts less stress on the cows, and increases longevity in our girls.

The smaller cows here are our yearlings. They were born last year and get to join the big girls out in the pastures as they grow up and join our Dairy herd or beef herd. Find out more about our farm at TheLittleRedFarm•com # # # # #
