Our VENDOR SPOTLIGHT this evening promotes Mahaska Native Plants !
Mahaska Native Plants is an initiative by the Mahaska County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), frequently hosting native plant sales to promote local biodiversity. These plant sales feature native Iowa flowers and grasses at highly affordable prices, often around $3 each, to help residents build pollinator-friendly gardens.
Popular native plants native to the Mahaska County area include:
• Forbs/Wildflowers: Butterfly milkweed, prairie blazing star, golden alexander, New England aster, and wild geranium.
• Grasses: Little bluestem, Indian grass, and Canada wild rye.
• Trees/Shrubs: Black willow and wild plum.
Where to Find Them
• Pella Farmers’ Market, of course!
• Mahaska County Environmental Learning Center: Hosts SWCD plant sales where you can shop from a selection of over 20 native varieties. After major kickoff events, passive sales are often available using a scan-and-pay system on-site.
