What are the odds?!

Not only is today a Solar Eclipse in the northern hemisphere, it's also an incredible rare milestone in our produce realm!

Our friends at Providence Organic Farm called us on Tuesday and asked: "do you think your customers would want a surprise August strawberry harvest??"
We didn't even hesitate! All we asked was, "how many flats are we talking about here???"

And that's how we ended up with 120 quarts of some of the most beautiful strawberries of the entire year!

Come and get them while they're here!

They are joining Organic Blueberries AND Organic Peaches in the Market today!

This week is the final week for Organic Blueberries.
And Organic Red Haven Peaches are just ramping up!

We are also in the middle of PEAK MELON!

We are harvesting sweet red and yellow watermelons and luscious cantaloupes as fast as we can to keep the market stocked!

This is the APEX of melon season!

Our last big harvest of yellow watermelons is in the market now!

Sometimes it feels like for the other 9 months of the year, people ask us where the fresh fruit is...
And then we have to explain seasonal fruit schedules, short season dynamics, and the reality of farming in northern Michigan.

Well right now, it's the opposite!
These are the months we live for!
The fleeting few months when there is more fruit to consume than there are meals in the day!
When dinner can be a berry appetizer with a melon salad followed by a peach cobbler!!

Know your farmer!!
Just like that, our nation has been thrust into another major food recall affecting fresh produce.
Demand for local lettuce is at record levels and now, jalapeño peppers are a major concern.
Good news! Local farms are NOT part of this recall. Farms like ours are part of the solution.

Someone told us recently: “Gosh, what is going on?!? It feels like fresh produce is under attack this summer!”

Respectfully, fresh produce is not under attack - the issue lies with having just a handful of farm business behemoths who produce the vast majority of fresh produce in our country. When one farm supplies 26 states and thousands of stores and restaurants with a crop, it doesn’t take but one bad field to generate nationwide panic. When 2% of farms control 42% of all agricultural land you know things are out of balance.

Know your farmer, know your food.

The Best Day of the Year!

Today is like a Lunar Eclipse of Peak Produce in Michigan!

We have 2,000 ears of Sweet Corn, 1,000 pounds of Peaches, 2,500 pounds of tomatoes, 300 pounds of Blueberries, and 4,000 pounds of Melons!

All 100% ORGANIC!

It's the one time of year when everything overlaps and all the bounty is perfect!

A week ago, we thought we were 10 days away from peaches...
Surprise! They're ready now!!!

A week ago, we got the first sweet corn of the season...
Then we sold out in 5 hours and finally got a fresh harvest delivered last night after dinner!

A week ago we were concerned blueberry season was ending...
Then the grower had a big week and we were able to restock!

And on our farm, we set a goal to have melons earlier...
Surprise! We've got ALL the melons right now!!!
At this time last year, we still had not harvested a single melon!

We don't think so!
Last Saturday was busy, so we've got twice as much corn ready right now!
Grown locally, Certified Organic, BIG ears, and harvested less than 24 hrs ago!

Starlight Watermelons are IN the Market!!!

We harvested a couple thousand pounds of melons yesterday and the stars of the show (pun intended!) are the Starlight Watermelons!

Starlight is now the only Red Watermelon variety we grow! Great flavor, not too many seeds, and delicious!!

We're still rocking LOADS of our famous Yellow Watermelons AND super sweet, silky smooth Cantaloupes and SO glad to see Starlight joining the lineup!

It's PEAK SUMMER in the Market right now!

Peaches! Melons! Blueberries!

Organic Peaches were picked last night and are arriving to our Market this morning at 10AM!!!!

We are SO excited!

These are USDA Organic Red Haven Peaches!!

Grown right here in northern Michigan!

But there's only 700 pounds available for this first harvest!
(As much as could be harvested before rain last night)

So if you want some, you'd be wise to come today, Wednesday!

If we sold out of 800 # of Sweet Corn in under 5 hours on Saturday, we're really not sure how long these peaches will last!

We will have peaches ready to go by 10AM, Wednesday, August 5th.
That's today!

We grow ALL of the melons we sell and we are thrilled to see these beauties flying off the shelf.

It should be noted, that we set out with a specific melon goal this year.

We wanted to do everything in our power to get melons earlier this year.

So we set a goal.
One ripe cantaloupe harvested in July and one ripe watermelon harvested in the August single digits.

And we've achieved both goals big-time!

Our first cantaloupe harvest last year was August 11th.
Our first watermelon harvest was August 13th.
And the first harvest of peaches arrived on August 14th.

THIS YEAR!

We harvested our first Cantaloupe AND our first Watermelon on July 31st!
The first harvest of peaches arrives on August 5th!

What a difference a year makes!
This is making August kickoff in truly spectacular fashion!

New Crop Alert!

Local, Organic, Sweet Corn, Cantaloupes, AND Yellow Watermelons!

Two nights ago, we were getting ready for a family picnic and went to the Melon Field to check (yet again) to see if any melons were ready...

After the extreme heat on Thursday, we really thought we had a chance.

Much to our delight, there was a whole patch of Cantaloupes that had turned perfectly ripe!
Then we looked to our right, and a whole section of Yellow Watermelons was ready for the taking!

We immediately took two of each for our picnic!
And holy wow! Still warm from the sun, these melons were dripping down our faces as we enjoyed the official start to Melon Season!

This was especially special because we set a farm goal this year to achieve ONE single ripe melon before August. And we are proud to report, we achieved over 1,000 pounds harvested on July 31st!!!

Yeehaw!

Just as we were stocking melons in the Market, we received a surprise message from Reid at Second Spring Farm.

He said: Hey! Good News! We're harvesting the first corn of the season today, right now!

And boy oh boy is this corn stunning!

Organic Corn.
Local Corn.
Fresh Corn.

And we are SO pleased to have it available for you TODAY!
You'll want to get it before we sell out!

***It should be noted, this kind of farmer-to-farmer commitment to our customers, running long days and nights, having picnic meals turn into morning chores, and first harvests turn into late night rendezvous, THIS is what makes our Market special.

Big grocery stores are not leaving the dinner table to meet a grower with the freshest harvest at dusk so that the customers have the best possible experience on Saturday morning.

Regular stores are not checking their fields for a picnic snack one night and harvesting 1,000 pounds the next morning to share with their customers.
THIS kind of close contact with our crops, this kind of close communication with our farmer friends, this 24/7 effort to deliver the best of everything, THIS is what makes the Bear Creek experience so special.

We see it and feel it everyday, and we're so glad to be able to share the bounty with all of you - that is what makes it all worth it.

True story:
It was just after 6pm the other day, and there was a customer car parked about halfway between our Market and Atkins Road. Farmer Brian being the helpful fellow that he is, was concerned that perhaps they were having car issues. Upon cruising down to see how he could help, he learned that this customer simply HAD to stop and chow down their Food Truck goodness because their mouth was watering too much!

They couldn't imagine driving all the way home and waiting another moment before devouring their Burger & Fries!

And we get it!

This is the time of year we get a lot more responses like these:

"The best darn burger in the universe, prepared perfectly!! The fries with Bear Creek sauce were exceptional but that burger!!! I’ve never had a better burger anywhere. OUTSTANDING!!!"

"Love the food truck! Your fries are truly addictive!"

Yes! We HAVE Lettuce!

We are harvesting everyday, we are washing and packing everyday, and except for last Saturday (so sorry!) we've been able to keep it in stock every day.

For now, we are working on Spring Mix, Kale, and Microgreens!
And we intend to keep these items fully stocked as best as we possibly can!

Besides greens, everything is starting to roll in from the fields!

This week features our FIRST harvest of freshly dug New Potatoes!
Also our FIRST big harvest of Sunflowers! (more on that below!)
Also our FIRST big harvest of sweet colorful Bell Peppers!

Also our FIRST harvest of stunning fresh Sweet Onions and Shallots!
Did we mention the big bags of Basil are back???
Not to mention so much Fresh Garlic!
(We harvested 20,000 bulbs last Friday!)

Freshly dug new potatoes are available now!

From soil to Market in under 3 hours, these babies are so fresh from the earth you'll be amazed.

With tender spuds and thin skins, it takes a lot of hands and gentle care to safely get these taters dug, washed, and packed for you in the Market.

But it's worth it!

After a 2-year hiatus from digging fresh, new potatoes, we are back at this Summer!
