Happy May!!!
The weather may still be pretty unpredictable but at least it's not 90 degrees! Those warm days may have been a nice break from the cold but this spring has been a rough one for not just the ramps but also the fruit farmers. Many people don't realize that the orchard fruits such as cherries, peaches, plums, apples & pears, only have one chance to bloom and set fruit for the season. So anytime we have early spring warm weather encouraging those trees to bloom followed by a frost, the fruit is in danger. This year seems to be particularly rough for both PA & NJ fruit. Some Jersey farmers are on record saying that they predict there was 90% crop loss of peaches in the state. Hopefully the losses aren't as bad as predicted because I know we look forward to peach season every year. Obviously, we always promote shopping local but especially in these harder years, consider spending your grocery budget at the farmer's market. A lot of these fruit farmers also plant veggies to make sure they have something to sell if this happens. And in a time where everything is expensive, that high quality farmer's market purchase is also a great value, often staying good far longer than any ACME produce could hope for. And while you're there, stop by our stand to say hi.
If you want to get local produce every week but don't want to deal with the farmer's market crowds, sign up for the fifth month farm CSA. This is our 4th year being a pick up site for their CSA and we love having their beautiful produce to cook with every week. The best thing about fifth month's CSA is the quality, but the second best thing? YOU GET TO CHOOSE YOUR VEGGIES!!! Every Monday, they send out an email with that week's availability. You pick your produce. They deliver it to the shop on Thursday afternoons (pick up is officially Friday but as long as we have it, you can swing by and pick it up anytime). Going to be busy one week? Choose potatoes or carrots or cabbage or whatever you like that stays good in your fridge forever. Last day to sign up is May 15th. First pick up is May 29th.
This week is the last week of
ramp sausage! In shop only!
Punk Rock Wine official releases!!
The time has come! We have wine in bottles. 3 wines for now but it's a start. We have labels designed in house. We have merch.
The very first wine made was a skin contact oxidized Gruner Veltliner, dry & savory with a sherry like nuttiness. The grapes came from a family friend in Berks County that was tending to a one acre plot. These grapes were a catalyst for the winery starting in the first place. Now this wine would be special for those reasons alone but on top of that, our friend sold the property over the winter, so it looks like this one is a singularity. And only 200 bottles made to boot! Fantastic with charcuterie. I think I know a place where you can have both ;)
Next, we have an Albarino we are calling Ananas (pineapple) due to all of its wonderful tropical fruit characteristics. Traditionally, most Spanish Albarino are light-bodied & citrus forward with salinity. This is not that wine. These grapes, from Stony Run vineyards in Berks Co, were ripe and tropical. Then we rested the wine on lees (fine sediment) for 6 months giving it a fuller, rounder texture. This wine can be an easy drinker by the pool or can be paired with a more serious meal. She's versatile.
And our last bottled wine from this release is our Vidal Sfuso. Vidal Blanc is a hybrid grape varietal that is pretty common on the east coast. What is a hybrid? It's a grape that has been cross bred from a European grape and a native North American grape. It makes a grape that is easier to grow in our east coast climate while introducing the flavor profiles of European winemaking grapes. The Vidal Blanc was foot stomped and then fermented in stainless steel tank. It sat on its skins for 6 months. So this is also a skin contact or orange wine. Now this wine is made only from the free run portion of the tank. Free run is the portion of the wine that freely flows without having to press the grapes. We called this Sfuso, which in Italian means "loose". It's loose wine! The free run is lighter in color, is more aromatic and less tannic. Be on the lookout later in the year for the Vidal Pressato.
Now if you have read this far, you may want to join our wine club! Wine club members get a quarterly release of 3 wines along with an invite to winery parties, a t-shirt and tote bag. If you'd like to join click below. A variety of payment options are available.
