28 years ago today, my grandfather, Jack Grodzinsky, left us in this lifetime.
It’s incredible to think about how much has changed in 28 years and yet how much of him is still with us.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand the word “legacy” a little differently. A legacy isn’t simply what someone leaves behind when they’re gone. It’s what continues because they were here.
And every day we open the doors at Miracle Mile Deli, a piece of my grandfather continues.
It’s in the traditions we protect. It’s in the way we take care of people. It’s in the customers who have become friends, the families who have been coming through our doors for generations, and the responsibility we feel to leave this place better for the generation that comes after us.
I was fortunate enough to know him as my Papa, an incredible grandfather, mentor and friend. But his impact reached far beyond our family. He cared deeply about people and about this community, and 28 years later, I’m incredibly proud to have the responsibility of carrying forward what he helped build.
Maybe that’s the greatest thing any of us can hope for…that long after we’re gone, something good continues in this world simply because we were here.
I hope we’re making you proud.
