🌳 Growing a healthier future for our canopy! 🌱💚

Today, work begins in the South Parking Lot as part of Pinecrest Gardens’ ongoing, multi-year plan to care for and renew our beloved tree canopy.

The Ficus trees in this area have been affected by Hypoxylon (Biscogniauxia) canker, an incurable disease that can compromise a tree’s health and safety. After years of care and monitoring, an independent certified arborist identified the trees that need immediate attention.🌱 And here’s the important part: every affected tree will be replaced.

We’re replanting mature Ficus benjamina (the same species) to preserve the shade as well as historic feature and character that are part of the historic designation of the Gardens. We’re also improving soil and irrigation in the planting areas to give the new trees the healthiest possible start. 💧🌿

This is a phased process, guided by science, our certified arborist, and coordination with DERM (Department of Environmental Resources Management). By replacing trees thoughtfully and over time, we can protect our community’s safety while maintaining the lush canopy we all love. 💚

🌳 Pinecrest Gardens neighbors, here’s the scoop on the trees in our South Parking Lot!

At Pinecrest Gardens, we never take tree removal lightly 💚 Our canopy is a huge part of what makes us so special, and caring for it sometimes means making difficult decisions when trees are no longer healthy or safe 🥺

The Ficus trees in the South Parking Lot are infected with Hypoxylon (Biscogniauxia) canker, an incurable disease that affects a tree’s vascular system and increases the risk of branch or trunk failure ⚠️ Over the past several years, we’ve done everything we could to help these trees thrive — including pruning, soil treatments, irrigation adjustments, and ongoing monitoring. After an assessment by an independent, certified arborist, certain trees have now been identified for removal to help protect our visitors, staff, and property.

🌱 This is not a one-time project. It’s the next step in a multi-year plan guided by our arborist’s recommendations and coordinated with DERM (Department of Environmental Resources Management).

And yes — every tree we remove will be replaced! 💚 Because Pinecrest Gardens is listed on the national and state historic registers, we’re replacing the removed trees with mature Ficus benjamina — the same species — helping preserve the shade, character, and historic feel of the Gardens. We’re also improving the soil and irrigation in these planting areas to give the new trees the healthiest possible start. 💧

🌳 WHAT TO EXPECT

📅 Sept. 8–11: Tree removal, trenching & soil work
🌱 Sept. 11–15: New Ficus replacement planting
🚫 Sept. 13: Farmers Market CLOSED
🧹 Sept. 18: Tree work & debris clearing complete
➡️ After that: Electrical, road surface & curb improvements

We know it can be hard to watch several trees come down at once, but sometimes caring for the canopy means making room for its future 🌿🌱
