High5Kitchen Placerville Natural Foods Co-op’s Chris Smith & her High5Kitchen cover whole foods, local farms, t As many of you know, my name is Chris Smith.

My passion for this program comes from being part of the 5% of women still alive after 10 years who have been diagnosed with Grade C clear cell ovarian cancer. I attribute much of my fortune to the changes I made in my diet. Placerville Natural Foods Co-op has joined me and the High5Kitchen with a 15% member discount program that celebrates and honors a return to whole foods. I would like to than

k all the people who have made this program possible, from the Board of Directors, who approved it, to the store staff who implemented it and the numerous co-op members who have helped in big and little ways as well as nonmembers who believed in the concept--healthy whole foods at affordable prices! Of course, I cannot forget the customers who shopped and prepared each Pick and hopefully enjoyed them as well! And for those who do not live in our area-enjoy the recipes, news picks and remember to support your local farmers using sustainable, organic practices, your Co-ops and all the people you know who are trying to make it easier and more affordable for the public to eat healthy and to simply celebrate life!

Are products bearing the “Non-GMO Project Verified” seal GMO free?

The following is from the organization itself. This may underscore why choosing organic is best.

" Unfortunately, “GMO free” and similar claims are not legally or scientifically defensible due to limitations of testing methodology. In addition, the risk of contamination to seeds, crops, ingredients and products is too high to reliably claim that a product is “GMO free.” The Project’s claim offers a true statement acknowledging the reality of contamination risk, but assuring the shopper that the product in question is in compliance with the Project’s rigorous standard. The website url is included as part of the Seal to ensure that there is transparency for consumers who want to learn more about our verification. While the Non-GMO Project’s verification seal is not a “GMO free” claim, it is trustworthy, defensible, transparent, and North America’s only independent verification for products made according to best practices for GMO avoidance. More on the Non-GMO Project: "For non-organic “natural” products making “non-GMO” claims, results showed that these claims
cannot always be trusted. While Peace Cereal® and
Annie’s Homegrown® were indeed free of significant
levels of GE ingredients, Barbara’s Bakery® Puffins®
and Whole Foods’ 365®Corn Flakes, which are both
enrolled in the Non-GMO Project contained more
than 50% GE corn.

On the other hand, as a control, eCornucopia
Institute also tested Nature’s Path® certified organic corn
flakes, which were free of significant GE contamination
(>0.5%). these test results underscore the importance of the
organic label, which assures consumers that the
manufacturer uses only non-genetically engineered
ingredients..." See link below.

However, Non-GMO Project states that while products can be "enrolled" they do not receive the "Non GMO" seal unless they have fall within that definition. For Non GMO Project response see http://www.nongmoproject.org/2011/10/25/clarification-in-response-to-cornucopia-report/

". . . many products still contain GM corn and soy, despite being enrolled in the Non-GMO Project.

According to the Cornucopia Institute, the Non-GMO Project “enrolls” products before it verifies them as being non-GMO which doesn't make very much sense. "

There is an established misconception among consumers that natural or even organic labeling means more nutritious and less toxic ingredients. This is not always the case and breakfast cereals are no exception. The Kashi brand is owned by Kellogg Company, one of the largest...

"Cholesterol-lowering statin therapy is based on the observation that high cholesterol levels in a person’s blood are associated with more heart attacks and stroke.

The organic substance cholesterol is found in large amounts in all animal foods. When people eat meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products their blood cholesterol levels rise.

The rationale is that lowering these levels with medication will fix the problem. As discussed above, the real-life benefits have been minimal.

Not surprisingly, this failure has led researchers to look into other mechanisms to explain how eating animal products and other unhealthy foods cause artery damage." See link below for more.

At the High5Kitchen our motto is to maximize plant based whole foods and minimize processed ones. Enjoy!
