Honeybee smorgasbord! All you can eat!!

The variety is “Ginger Gold”, a very early variety. It’s a close relative of Golden Delicious, and ripens early in late July thru August. Keeps for weeks in the fridge!
We’ll plan on a special weekend for these sweet-tart apples then!
Thank you!
Pops!

I didn’t even get these “Contender” peach trees staked before the bees were on the flowers! I won’t let them set any fruit this year, and maybe next year, so the roots and tree structure can get strong. Several new plantings today before the rain!
There’s still plenty of smoking wood for those that think they missed it. Probably through March. Just dont park on Country Club Drive!
We have other exciting (well, to me!) stuff going in this Spring! Stay tuned!

Well, I have good news, good news, not so good news with attached good news!
1. We are adding several new bee hives this spring, to help with pollination and provide honey that we can actually have for sale at the orchard later this summer!
2. We are adding 25 new orchard trees this spring: more apples (Golden Delicious, Jonathon, Macintosh…, peaches, and 3 varieties of pears)!!! It will be a couple more years before they bear fruit, but it’s a start!
3. We will NOT be doing pumpkins at the farm this year. The only way to rid the fields of cockleburrs is to let it lay idle for a year, and use the wonder of chemistry to eradicate the plant population. However, we are planting 8 varieties of some miniature pumpkins at the orchard, so hopefully we can somewhat pacify your urging when you pick apples. We will get an early start on these minis using our new greenhouse, then transplant. We hope this works!
I got a little behind on the pruning getting hives ready, and I do appreciate all those that are picking up prunings for their smokers! More to come!

Some of you cruising Country Club Drive or Lexington Road here in PH might have noticed I’ve started a pretty aggressive pruning project on the apple and peach trees. This will continue probably through March.
Any of you or your friends that use fruit wood for smoking meats or added flavor to a cookout are welcome to come drag off all you want. Bring a saw! Just the stuff I’ve left on the ground, NOT THE STANDING TREES!😁
Parking on Lexington only, not in the orchard and especially NOT ON COUNTRY CLUB DR! You will get a ticket! It is a strictly enforced No Parking Street!
Anything left end of March I’m running through a chipper for mulch.
Also note I’m planting 23 new trees this Spring; apples, peaches, even pears!!
Stay Tuned!

First off, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Pops and Mimi!
Long story, but one of our apple guest pickers this year came by our son’s house today and left this delightful tin of holiday goodies! Grandson Walter greeted the lady, but failed to get her name! Alas, no card attached; so if any of you out there might know of this kind gesture, please private message me or even refer in the comments.
We have told most of you that the orchard is a social event for us, and we celebrate, this week especially, all of you! Thank you all!

To our 2025 Pumpkin friends:
I’m sorry we won’t be opening the pumpkin patch this year. We planted more than 3500 “hills”, plus some watermelon, plus some giant sunflower…. Then came the 5.5” rain the first of August, and Big Creek was out for several days. Then the heat and dry came. The bees did their job pollinating, but the fruit just wouldn’t set in the heat. The one pumpkin out of all this (pictured) I gave to granddaughter Kate Halcomb. I’m sure you grandpas out there understand!
I sprayed w**d killer on the fields last week hoping to knock out the cockleburrs you all have come to appreciate!😕
We look forward to next year though! That’s farming for ya!
Love to all……

Saturday we had families and old friends out for a nice day of just being outside! It looks like Sunday will be a nice one also!
The apples are getting sweeter with age, and perfect ones are there if you are patient and persistent!
I’m showing a “Granny Smith” with the dark spots on one side, and clear on the other. This is “sooty spot”, and found on all apples that have not had any fungicides sprayed on the fruit or trees. It forms only on the waxy outside layer of the fruit, and wipes off with a damp rag. Our fruit has had no pesticides applied. None!
The orchard is open today, maybe for the last go-round this year.
Two peck bags $15.00, one bag $10:00!
I might or might not be there!

To our valued customers and friends: This weekend marks the final opportunity to visit G Pops for apple picking. We are pleased to announce that we have surpassed last year's sales at the same pricing. For payment, please use the cash mailbox or Venmo using the information provided on the picnic table.
Our top varieties, as pictured, include Enterprise, Granny Smith, and Arkansas Black. Additionally, we are offering complimentary buckeye seeds for children, which are believed to bring good luck for 30 years. That’s the buckeye! Children bring good luck forever!
Our hours of operation for this weekend are Saturday, October 4, from 10:00 to 5:00, and Sunday, October 5, from 12:00 to 5:00

Well, it’s HOMECOMING in Pleasant Hill! And, you know what that means!
When you and your family comes by the orchard, please don’t belittle some of the fruit on the ground! If it looks good from eye level, pick it up and take a look. There’s a good chance it’s a keeper! And sweeter than those in the tree! That’s true for almost all of the varieties we’ve had this year. Try to find the yellow tinted Harrison; it’s sweet and crisp! Granny Smith both in the tree and on the ground! Same Liberty and Enterprise! Gala is pretty well done, unless you’re making cider.
If you see a really rotten one, well, it’s going home. From whence it came!🍎🍏

Now here is a young man who understands about “free apples for kids in their pockets and/or hands”!!
Pretty good show today of family pickers, and still plenty of nice ones for next week.
I am also showing here the current status of the ONE pumpkin out of 4,000 planted at the pumpkin farm. I’m thinking opening bids at $500, so I can at least break even on seed, fertilizer costs. Should be available about Thanksgiving! 🎃
