Multnomah County, in conjunction with Tribal governments, has passed a resolution to rename Sauvie Island Bridge to Wapato Bridge, in recognition of the Indigenous Peoples who lived on the land.

Meet Sauvie Island Farmers’ Markets newest partners. Cuauhtémoc Villa and Rae Hart have been farming on Sauvie Island for years, working with various farms to build healthy soil and grow veggies, herbs, mushrooms and native plants. Their shared love for the Island, the soil, and the waters has inspired their new project - Ground Culture. Through Ground Culture, Cuauhtémoc and Rae are partnering with microbes and fungi to help restore waterways and build healthy soil on the Island and in our Portland community. They also partner with agencies, nonprofits, schools and landowners to do education and restoration work. They have donated many of their bokashi balls for remediation projects all over the country and provide scholarships to all of their workshops.

Join Ground Culture during the market to learn about bokashi balls - microbe mud balls used globally to clean toxic water and soil. Together, we will be making bokashi balls to share the restorative power of the microbes with the island we all love! Ground Culture will also be offering compost tea and bokashi to support soil health in your garden. Visit groundculturepdx.com  to learn more about their work and come make a mud ball at the Farmers’ Market on July 9th at the Sauvie Island Grange to meet Ground Culture in person!
