e. Shrubs are the american version of drinking vinegars; imagine a fizzy, soda-like drink that is drier and so much more sophisticated than soda can ever be. Not as sour as you’d imagine a mouthful of vinegar to be, what with the raw honey and botanical ingredients.

From May through August, we were leased a house by a large Navajo housing entity, some might say it’s an authority. Things were great, we had space to store, package, and deliver food to hundreds of Diné families and thousands of relatives within Diné territory. We planted a garden, a source of comfort and peace for us, we were on a roll. Then for whatever reason, this authority decided to lick federal boots and didn’t renew our lease. THEN they destroyed our Da’ah’keeh/corn field, which is like ripping a baby from its mother. We don’t mind the lease not being renewed, more opportunities for us, but the destruction of the Da’ah’keeh shocked us into realizing how precarious our abilities to live autonomously are in the hands of inhuman institutions. Help us raise $75,000 to begin our first stage of a long held dream of building an off-grid commune.

We are still providing food and crucial supplies, but have slowed down due to the size of our cozy Infoshop, which we pay rent for to a fu***ng oil company!

What are the stories of the farmers, volunteers and recipients who are part of EastWest Food Rescue?

“Not one particular story, but thousands. The faces of people when they receive their bags of produce and bite into an apple - haven't even seen fresh fruits for months now. The tears we see when people who are forgotten and often worried about asking for help actually get their bags filled with potatoes and onions.

The single mom who came to get food for her neighborhood and had to sit down on a pile of pallets as she started sobbing when she realized we will fill her car to the brim and she will have food to take home to her kids too.

The quiet ask last Friday when our convoy unloaded at Toppen*sh - can you come again next week?

The distanced hug motions people give us as each truck pulls out fully loaded from the farm.... the $165 dollars raised in small bills in Port Orchard because they are so happy they can get food there too and they want to give back. The Seatac community where 15,000 pounds of food was shared out in less than 3 hours last week.

The convoy drivers, who brave distance, the Cascade roads, rain, wind, thunder and hot sun each week to get the produce to us. And the farmers who grew all this food with care and have to somehow make ends meet so they can plant more food for the coming season. Thousands of stories.”

Food is Free Project Tacoma is one of many vital groups in the chain we share for getting rescued food to families in hardship. We just found out that the Tacoma Weekly ran an article about them. Our Farmer Frog was able to give them 30 tons of potatoes and onions to distribute to Pierce and Thurston County residents. Check out the linked article!

Happy Day One of Month of The !

For those familiar with the profession, it’s no wonder more than 10 percent of U.S. double as of the military.

The veteran farmers are also a relatively seasoned group, with 294,974 having spent more than 10 years on their farm, compared to just 14,566 with less than two years’ experience.

Likewise, War-era veterans dominate the group, with 108,051 over the age of 75 and 149,983 between the ages 65 and 74. Those under the age of 25 numbered 548 across the entire nation. The average age of veteran farmers was 67.9, a full decade older than the U.S. overall average of farmers.

Here at the The Veterans Ecological Trades Collective,
We cultivate a new generation of ecologically grounded, regenerative farmers, and develop viable, meaningful pathways forward through the collaboration of the farming and military communities.

We believe that veterans possess the unique skills and character needed to strengthen rural communities and create regenerative food systems. We believe that permaculture offers purpose, opportunity, and physical and psychological benefits.
