Rhubarb is one of those fleeting spring ingredients that feel gone as soon as you've gotten used to it…

♥️Technically a vegetable, it's prized for its tart, almost bracing flavor and its ability to transform from a cool, fibrous stalk into something deep and unctuous.

⚗️Rhubarb was first used primarily as a medicinal plant—its roots have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for millennia.

🥧 Its emergence as a popular culinary ingredient in Europe is generally linked to the 18th and 19th centuries, when sugar became more affordable.

☠️ Rhubarb leaves are poisonous and should be discarded.

👩🏽‍🍳With such a short season now is the time to cook with it, whether you're leaning sweet or letting that tang cut through something richer. Find our recipe suggestions for rhubarb shrub, chutney, and more in this week's newsletter (link in bio).

🍰Don't feel like cooking?
Several bakers at the market are incorporating rhubarb into their treats this week!

Tote-ally Cool!
💙As if you need another reason to meet us at the market this Sunday, check out our new Montavilla Farmers Market tote bags! Created by local artist Chloe Kendall, the design process was about as analog as you can get: "I wanted to showcase the beauty of fresh produce and I thought the process of cyanotype might be a fun technique to try. It would truly capture the silhouette of the fruits and veggies. Cyanotype falls in between printmaking and photography: you treat blank paper or fabric with a copper solution, then arrange objects on top, then 'expose' your composition to the sun.
🌞 The places where the sunlight penetrates the paper or fabric are 'set' by the UV light and turn dark blue. The places where the light was blocked, the copper solution falls away in the rinsing process and remain white.”
💙We love supporting local artists as much as we do farmers and food producers, and we know you will too! Pick up yours- and an extra for a friend-at the info booth this Sunday.

Asparagus season is finally here! The tender, vibrant stalks from the lily family are best harvested young for peak flavor and nutrition. Packed with vitamins A, C, E, K, folate, and fiber, it supports gut health while delivering antioxidants with minimal prep time. Look for firm, vibrant green spears with tight, closed tips—no wilting, sliminess, or teathery opens.
Thinner stalks (pencil-sized) are often more tender. Remove any tasteners, trim the bottoms, and keep upright in a jar with water, like you would with a bouquet. Alternatively, wrap them in a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag. Storing in the refrigerator will extend crispness to about a week or more versus just a few days in the open. We love them gently steamed or grilled-the newsletter link in our bio includes three easy recipes we have on repeat this month.

🍓really there are no words......However...😅local strawberries arrive so incredibly fresh and ripe-often picked just hours earlier-that they require gentler handling than supermarket varieties to preserve their peak flavor and texture. We want to be sure that you maximize them at their berry best!
🍓💡Whether storing in the fridge for a couple of days or freezing for future smoothies and fillings, strawberries prefer a little personal space. Sort through them first, separating any bruised berries, which can still be used for smoothies and jams but will spoil faster. For best results, wait to wash them until just before eating, since excess moisture can also speed up spoilage. They'll also stay fresher longer it you leave the stems on until you're ready to use them. Once sorted, store dry strawberries in a single layer or in a shallow container lined with paper towels in the refrigerator.
🍓🚿Just before you're ready to eat them, fill a large bowl with cool water, add the berries, and gently swirl them for 30 seconds to remove dirt and residue. Some people add a few drops of vinegar to the water as an added measure, but if you plan to use them straight away this isn't necessary. Drain. Remove the green stems (also called the calyx) with a small paring knife or by pinching them off to avoid wasting the juicy flesh beneath. For peak flavor, let them come to room temperature if they've been chilled.
🍓🧊**Freezing Strawberries for Later Use** Remove stems and wash strawberries gently as above, then pat them completely dry with paper towels to prevent ice crystals. Spread in a single layer without touching on a baking sheet or plate and freeze for two to three hours until solid. Transfer to airtight freezer bags, pressing out excess air, and label with the date. They'll keep well for up to six to 12 months; thaw in the fridge for best texture in recipes.
🍓Got any other berry tips to share?
