Spring! I know, I know it’s not official yet, but it sure feels like it.
Put the first of the spring garden in today, broccoli. The tomatoes and peppers have begun the hardening off process. The onions and garlic have been there a little while. The citrus trees are covered with blooms and smell amazing. Herbs have been placed in pot where they will grow with protection from the chickens, but the chickens will be the beneficiary of them for sure.

Oh and I guess I dropped a clove when planting garlic and it decided growing in the yard would be suitable.

What are you planting this spring? Anything new? I usually do one “new” or experimental crop. I think this year experimenting with different herbs will be it for me. Or the fact that I’m determined to be successful with stringless beans. We will see how it goes.

The girls are settling into their new house and seem happy, though have decided that laying in the nesting boxes isn’t the cool thing to do any more. We will have to work on that.

A left over salad brought home by the kid from work made a great snack and they devoured it. Can’t wait til the teens start laying too.

Trying to decide if we want more chickens or not, what do you think?

Homegrown tomatoes in early February? I’d say this experiment paid off.
I found this plant as a volunteer growing in my yard between my garden and the house late summer. Pulled it up, and stuck it in the garden as a “let’s see what happens”. Done fall and approaching freezes I pulled it from the garden and put it in a pot where I could move it in and out of the garage depending on weather.
Somehow after 2 weeks in the garage where I completely forgot to water it, it’s still mostly thriving and the tomatoes are starting to ripen.

This is definitely something I’ll try again next fall to have fresh tomatoes earlier in the season again.

Upgraded the kids to a new house complete with a larger fenced in yard. Tomorrow I’ll add wood shavings to the floor, just ran out of time today and was determined to get them moved in.
They’re less than thrilled, but they will adapt.

In October, while off on an adventure (which you can read about at ) a predator wiped out half our flock of chickens.
So now, we have 9 new babies quickly growing and making themselves at home. We hatched eggs in an incubator for the first time, and ordered some chick my mail as well.
A new run is in the process of being constructed to allow plenty of free range fun, but hopefully provide a barrier from some predators.
These babies are yet to be named, but it’s been fun to watch them grow.

First attempt at soap making! 🧼

This is a lavender oatmeal goats milk soap. Made last night and cut this morning to continue saponification and curing.
It started out so ugly, and while it still isn’t the prettiest, it was a good first attempt I think. I was able to test the lather with the sliver left after cutting. Seeing it lather gave me as small sense of accomplishment.

A little something different from the harvest report today.

HERBS! The garden is current over flowing with basil, parsley and catnip.

BASIL. I have more basil harvested and dried than I’ll ever need at this point, but the bees are sure loving it as they stock up their stores in preparation for winter.

PARSLEY. This was my first decent parsley harvest this year, mostly because I’ve been putting it off, but I was impressed with how much it was when I cut it up for drying.

CATNIP. Did you know catnip is a member of the mint family and many people use it for teas, as an insect repellent or to aid in wound healing? Neither did I, and this was planted just to se what kitty thought of it.
