Soil preparation and fertilizers for zucchini are the same as for cucumbers. It can be grown by seedling and non-seedling methods. With the seedling method, commercial products are received 10-15 days earlier. For this, 20-30-day-old seedlings are used. When the soil warms up to 14-16°C and the threat of spring frosts passes (May 10-20), it is planted on the beds. Using small-sized film covers, plants can be planted 5-10 days earlier. The planting scheme is 70x70 or 90x90 cm, 1-2 plants are placed in the nest. The depth of planting plants is up to the cotyledons.
Seeds are sown on the beds when the soil temperature at a depth of 10-12 cm reaches 12-14°Д. The method of sowing is square-nest (70x70 or 90x90 cm). 2-3 seeds are sown in the nest. If there is a wireworm in the soil, the sowing rate is increased (5-6 seeds in a nest). The depth of seed wrapping is 4-6 cm. Mulching the nests with humus has a positive effect on the friendliness of seed germination, because under mulch the soil warms up better, moisture is preserved and a crust does not form.
Caring for plants consists in systematically loosening the rows, hunting weeds in the nests and fighting diseases and pests (as in cucumber). In the phase of formation of the first true leaf, the plants break through (pluck). 1-2 best-developed plants are left in the nest. In the phase of cotyledons, plants can be transplanted with a lump of earth. It is more appropriate to loosen the soil after rain or irrigation. In the southern regions of Ukraine, zucchini is watered 8-10 times, in the forest-steppe - 3-4 times, in Polissia and in the western regions - 1-2 times, depending on weather conditions. The irrigation rate is 35-5 l/m².
Zucchini fruits are harvested regularly when they reach technical ripeness (length 14-16 cm, thickness 7-10 cm). During this period, they have a tender and somewhat sticky skin and underdeveloped seeds. Fruits with a hard skin are not suitable for use. The crop is harvested mostly 2 times a week. During harvesting, care is taken not to leave overripe fruits on the plants and not to damage the stems and leaves. If harvesting is delayed, the fruits overgrow and lose marketable quality, plant productivity decreases.
