This is our annual reminder to test your soil. Garden soil gets depleted of nutrients, and even with regular additions of compost, aged manure, and lots of cover crops, we still find that our soil lacks certain nutrients critical for optimal health. Each year we test the plot we are getting ready to plant our garlic into. We amend the soil based on these reccomendations. Curious what an in-depth soil test looks like? Here's one of our soil tests from a few years ago, to give you an idea.

We've been using Western Labs out of Parma Idaho and have been really happy with the quality of their tests. You can also talk to your local University about soil testing. Western Labs also offers nematode and disease testing.

Obviously I'm going to tell you to grow both. You really need both to round out a nice yearly supply of garlic. Honestly, I'm not the friend you take to the plant store when you have a budget. I will convince you to buy all the pretty ones and especially the sad and neglected ones.

If you have limited space or interest in garlic (😵‍💫), you're fine with 1 variety. If you grow 5 kinds of tomatoes, 17 peppers, and mustard greens that you'll never eat because they're pretty (guilty), you'll feel like a kid in a candy shop on our website:

New to growing garlic and don't know where to start? We get that it's overwhelming to decide which varieties to grow so we've curated 3 samplers for 3 different types of gardeners. Each one comes with clearly labeled varieties and our Garlic Growing Guide to teach you the "ins & outs" of growing great garlic.

Our 1 lb Sampler (pictured) gives you 3 distinctly different types of garlic: a Porcelain (large bulbs with large cloves), a Standard Purple Stripe (fabulous flavor and good storage potential), and a 3rd variety that we pick based on your location. All the varieties are labeled so you know exactly what you're growing. Our goal is to help you find 1-2 varieties that do well for you.

Our 2 lb Sampler consists of a 1/2 lb of 4 different varieties: Music (a Porcelain), Chesnok Red (a Standard Purple Stripe), Purple Glazer or Inchelium Red (based on your location), and 1 more variety that we'll pick for you based on your location. This gives you 3 of our most adaptable varieties, plus something different to try. Great for the more experienced gardener, or a newbie who wants to dedicate more garden space to their new hobby (this fills a 4' x 8' bed nicely, with room to plants some shallots).

Our 3 lb Sampler is our 3 most adaptable varieties: Music, Chesnok Red, and Inchelium Red. You get a bit of a discount and the opportunity to add discounted shallots or culinary garlic. A more affordable way to grow a lot of garlic in 3 very distinct varieties. You won't get them mixed up, you'll have lots of "wow" bulbs, and plenty of bulbs that will store through the winter for you. You could easily harvest 120-150 bulbs from this planting.

You can add our Dutch Yellow Shallots or a bag of small/culinary bulbs to any sampler at a substantial discount, making it an even better deal.

It's a dusty mess but the bulk of the work is done. For the first time this year I'm sick of looking at garlic. I need some flowers and tomatoes in my life for a couple of days.

Most varieties are still in stock: www.mountainvalleygarlic.com
