Often referred to as Chinese its roots may actually me be closer to Japan.
We will definitely have to reach out to about this information because her grandfather Tsujuro Miyazaki former owner of the Horseshoe Cafe in Suffolk Va may have been the creator of yock.

A native of Norfolk, Virginia, she is the creator and host of the critically acclaimed podcast Setting the Table and the Emmy-winning PBS documentary Finding Edna Lewis.

The Richmond Legend is Home.

James Beard-nominated chef Shenarri Freeman transforms Southern soul food into something both deeply familiar and entirely new. Her vegan interpretations of Virginia comfort food --purple yams with blackberry coulis, collard greens stuffed with rice, Southern fried lasagna with pine nut ricotta--prove that plant-based cuisine can carry all the emotional weight of the dishes that shaped her Richmond upbringing.
Freeman's approach honors the agricultural traditions of the South while addressing the health and environmental concerns that led her to embrace veganism in 2017. Each plate reflects her understanding that soul food's essence lies not in specific ingredients but in the care, technique, and cultural memory that transforms simple components into something nourishing for both body and spirit.
This isntt vegan food trying to replicate meat-it's cooking that demonstrates how plant-based ingredients can express the full spectrum of Southern hospitality when treated with the respect and creativity these traditions have always deserved.

Richmond’s unofficial King of Patisserie

Justin Ross
A Richmond, Virginia native, Justin Ross is the Owner and Pastry Chef of JC Desserts. From menu creation, to customer consults, to making deliveries, Justin plays a vital part of bringing new and cutting edge desserts to the greater Richmond area.

Most recently Justin has come off his appearance on Food Network as a contestant on the Spring Baking Championship Season 8 where he left it all on the line for a chance at $25,000. His past experience has taken him down the South East of the United States coming from The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia where he learned a great deal about chocolate work, working under Jean-Francois Suteau. Justin has also gained a tremendous amount of experience from his other travels, notably working under Kelly Fayard at the Ballantyne Hotel in Charlotte, NC, as well as John Cook at Norman Love Confections in Fort Myers, FL. These are just a few stops along Justin’s journey that has molded him into the exceptional pastry chef that he is today.
