Community Market Days

Community Market Days Find us on the Asbury First lawn at the corner of Granger & East Ave.

We host an interactive farmer's market and community day every Wednesday June-August 4-7:30pm because we're passionate about creating space for local to become a way of life.

We were showered with love this weekend by family and friends and we couldn’t be more grateful. So many of the little touches and support originated from the market community we built. We had cookies and cupcakes baked by Bella , honey jars from and Taylor herself. 🐝 Dried flowers from our yard and from bouquets went to good use in our fairy jars. 💛 John from helped cater 🥕 family made food, too, and brought so much love and effort to transform a park lodge into a fairytale.

Though it’s tempting to see a project like the market in metrics, we see so much more of the value in the connections we made. Not only did we get to meet and treasure some incredible business owners, we also made real, genuine friends! We couldn’t feel more blessed for that. We hope to see many of you this summer, whether it’s at another local market or event or just out in the community.

Make sure you’re subscribed on Substack because we plan to continue some writing about the gifting economy we see developing and the often unseen benefits of local entrepreneurship.

Big News 💚 That’s been keeping us occupied - our family is growing and a little one will be joining us this summer!

As such, we will not be hosting the weekly Community Market Days this summer. We will miss you all but we know this next chapter requires our complete and utter devotion. We ARE planning to have an end-of-summer celebration to see you all at the end of August. Stay tuned for details on that!

We’d love to stay connected with you and we have a Substack profile set up so we can keep writing and dreaming together. That’s linked in our bio.

We have so appreciated the opportunity to create Community Market Days with you all! We’re hopeful that life will bring us back to that space as it fits and feels right. We’ll be sharing some “where are they now” vendor updates so you can still shop with the people you love this summer. We also shared a list of area markets we love and farms we find at them in our latest Substack!

💚🙏🏼💐🌸

Most of us only know organic food as a label, this is a follow up to my post about Italy when I said it was hard to find local, organic food at restaurants there. Here’s more of what I meant by that:

These pictures are from a restaurant in Costa Rica at the top of a mountain. This was my favorite meal of our trip simply because the produce was local and I could tell that from the look of it, but also from the flavor. I could also tell the food was made with intention. No mass production here.

➡️Shipping fresh food for miles causes a loss in flavor and nutrient profile. Eating at a local restaurant does not equal eating locally grown food. I was anticipating everything to be locally grown in Sicily, but there was a sad lack of seasonal food in the menus we encountered. No Sicilian lemon desserts on the menu, or prickly pear which was ripe for harvest when we went. Thus, Italy is like anywhere else. You have to do a little extra research to find the place serving food made with local flavor. Places that are passionate about cooking small batch, and working hard to go off the beaten path.

I love meals that are:
•Sourced from ingredients from local farms or people you know
•Made from food that hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides or grown in soil with synthetic outputs (which is likelier if they are growing a diverse range of crops)
•Small batch, made by hand, with high quality standards from start to finish.

Now I’m not saying this is the only way to get good food. Heck, I’m not even saying that I eat this way 100% of the time. All I’m saying is that it’s a level of awareness and practice I’m seeking. Getting our food to the table is immensely hard work. All the more reason to honor and revere the process in whatever stage it is at.

Hence why learning to work with soil, land, animals, and cooking my own food and fermenting my own things; what some call “homesteading” is such a treasured part of my life. And where ever you are on that journey, is beautiful. However you nourish yourself, you can always say a prayer and bless the food. Intention is everything. Winter is the perfect season to slow down & enjoy heartier meals cooked with love. ❤️

A lot of people feel forgotten. As we sort through these clothes and prepare to donate them, we think of those who will get to enjoy them thanks to the kindness of those who care enough to give. This is just half of what we have to bring to the Open Door Mission this week. Babies and kid’s items were in particularly high demand last time we went, so we were able to secure alot more of those items this time. Thank you 💚

“Sister Grace Miller devoted her life to caring for people who were too often forgotten by the rest of the world. She built the House of Mercy as a place where anyone in need could find safety, warmth, and com-passion. For decades, she showed Rochester what it looks like to love boldly and serve without hesitation.
Her more recent work with La Madonna Della Strada came from that same deep calling. The shelter provides comfort, stability, and a sense of belonging for people who have nowhere else to go. It reflects Sister Grace’s belief that every person deserves to be treated with dig nity and kindness, no matter their circumstances.
Her legacy lives in the thousands of lives she touched, the doors she opened, and the hope she offered. Sister Grace showed us the power of simple, steadfast care. Her presence will be missed, but her memory and her legacy are a true blessing.”

POV: Keeping our energy focused on what’s good and what we can impact in our community. It’s been wonderful to see so many amazing local businesses coming up with initiatives and ways to help fight food insecurity. Hopefully you’ve been seeing them on your feed, too, if not we will be sharing them on our stories as we come across them. Please tag any organizations you want to bring visibility to in the comments.
Also if you feel like sharing how you’re fighting food insecurity please do! We’re doing this as a community and it’s nice to find support amongst each other. 🤝

In Italy for our honeymoon! You could never have convinced me how much I’d miss home being here! There are so many little things I’m grateful for about where I live.

A couple, in order of how deeply I rely on them and how much they add to my life:

💛 Farm fresh food access. Milk, eggs, meat, VEGETABLES 🥕 😍 I love to cook and eat at home all these quality foods I am so grateful for. Being here is awesome but it’s mostly take-out we’re eating. Not everywhere in Italy serves high-quality organic foods (like sometimes portrayed)
I’ve actually yet to find a restaurant serving a seasonal / local menu.

💛 Friends and family! Mi italiano es piccolito (my Italian is small) which greatly limits connection & conversation. In a place whose culture is often romanticized, I feel more like an outsider looking in. In America, I have a lot of qualms with our culture but at least I feel in the waves, versus watching from shore. Weird feeling, and one I need to expound on more.

💛 Wide roads, sidewalks!, comfortable bathrooms. Everywhere we’ve been in Italy has had crazy tight, winding streets! Walking in some places feels crazy dangerous, and even when there are sidewalks a lot of them are run-down 😳—also, it’s not a guaranteed that a bathroom will have toilet paper, soap, a toilet seat, etc lol omg this has been quite an adventure.

Of course there have been so many wonderful moments too. Italians are very hospitable, so we’ve made nice memories. The landscape & scenery is also incredibly stunning! Much more we’re grateful for, just thought I’d share this home-gratitude post too, since this country is unrealistically romanticized when most think about it!

Lovely serendipitous opportunity to taste a pawpaw came from the weekend market & . Thanks! They’re delicious!

A tropical fruit native to New York. Wild! Tastes like a custard-y banana crossed with a mango 😋 this fruit was an important staple item in many indigenous folks’ diets. It represented abundance and was a celebratory food to eat!

I always thought these sounded sooo tasty, and they are! So grateful to have a first taste this year. 🥭

Check out those seeds!!! What! I will be saving some and attempting to plant my own pawpaw trees as they are listed as “threatened” in NYS. Anyone want to try growing some? I can keep you in mind to share seeds if the process is successful 💛
