The hardest post we’ve ever posted…
Last year, after strong consideration and many discussions, Chad and I decided to change careers and close our family business. We will not be opening Mother Shuckers Lobster Shack this season.
(Before you panic, our hope is to still have the occasional lobsters for sale here & there, but how and when is still to be determined…)
It’s no surprise if you have watched the News at all, that our Industry has been struggling. (For lack of better words)
When the Industry struggles, the Fishermen struggle. We began to struggle. It’s sad to see what’s happening to our Industry. I fear this will be one of many future posts from all over Maine.
In February, Chad made the COMMENDABLE choice to begin a new career at the age of 49. Chad has been a Maine Lobsterman his entire life and has never had any other profession. Imagine how hard of a decision this was. It was huge.
With the changes, regulations, and laws ever evolving, it was just TIME. It was now or never.
So, we turned a new leaf! 🍃 it’s a good move! Likely a smart one!
Please don’t be sad for us. This is a step in the right direction for our family! Mother Shuckers Lobster Shack did everything it was supposed to do; introduce us to new friends, save our financial wellbeing, support our local economy, and bring people into our lives we NEVER would have met. Those people we now call FAMILY. (That’s you!) and it was strong for 12 years ❤️
It was just time. I know you’ll all wonder “but how, when, where will we get our lobster?” And I don’t have the answer yet. In a perfect world, Chad would fish a day or two a week and keep his full time job, too. We’d sell lobsters here and there and be at least able to keep in touch.
But that handsome fisherman on the left has gone into a new career as a Corrections Officer at the WCJ, and I am actually taking classes to become a Teacher! We work crazy hours. I subbed all Winter at our local High School and fell in absolute LOVE with Teaching, so I’ll be taking classes towards an Eduction Degree and together we are living our BEST new lives!
We now have health insurance! Medical, Dental, Eye, 401k. Say what? What is this new world? It feels so good to pay $14 copays instead of cash out of pocket. It feels good to not avoid the doctors as last resorts, but instead be up-to-date with medical attention. To have RETIREMENT. It’s better late than nevah!
This is all around GOOD for our family. And I’m proud of US! ❤️ it’s been a brick-wall change. But for the GOOD.
We just sold our boat, the F/V Nadine Marie (ugh, that was tough! She was so good to us!) and bought a smaller boat to dabble with. When our schedules iron out, we may have occasional lobsters for sale again. But 7 day a week lobsters? Not anymore. As of now, I had to make this post. Our phones have been ringing off the hook with all our old friends, and it was time we filled you in.
Mother Shuckers Lobster Shack will always BE. It’s just taking a step back. I’ll never let it just go. Let us find our new rhythm and who knows what the future holds!
I know you’re sad. In a few ways, we are too. But we are also happier than we’ve been in a long time. This change was welcomed.
Please keep in touch with us. We will miss your faces but we are doing what our family simply had to do. Celebrate with us. Chad alone has made a 180° transition from a year ago. He loves his new career and I do too. Hes so handsome in uniform! 😍
Tough times don’t last, Tough PEOPLE do, and you’re looking at two of Maines toughest! How blessed we are that you all are in our forever circle. To be cont… I’ll keep you posted when our schedules relax!
Thank you for everything!
On to new adventures!
Keep those shirts, they’ll always be RELICS!
Please stay in touch. We will miss YOU, most!
