🥩 DILLY DELI EDUCATIONAL WEDNESDAY! 🥩
Ever wonder how corned beef gets its name? 🤔
Spoiler alert… there’s no corn involved! 🌽😂
Corned beef starts with a beef brisket that is cured in a brine made with salt, water, and a blend of seasonings. The curing process helps preserve the meat while giving it that distinctive savory flavor and beautiful color we all know and love.
So where does the “corned” part come from?
Years ago, large grains of rock salt were called “corns” of salt. Those big salt crystals were used to cure and preserve meat—so corned beef simply means beef cured with large grains of salt!
After curing, the brisket is usually cooked low and slow until it becomes tender enough to practically fall apart. 🤤
And THAT is how a humble cut of brisket becomes the delicious, salty, savory corned beef that ends up piled high on your favorite sandwich. 🥪💚
Now you know!
The next time you order corned beef, you can impress your lunch buddies with a little deli history. 😉
Come see us at Dilly Deli and let us do the cooking!
Because some things are better when they’re piled between two slices of bread. 😋
