As always, things have been slowing down on the farm for the last couple months. We’re still sending carrot orders to our friends at the Littleton Coop and White’s Market, but otherwise we’re in that time of year where we, and our land, are taking cues from the cold temps and dark nights. The ice rink is up, the greenhouses are covered in snow, and most of our crew is off until we start seeding greens again in a month or two.

But as our fields are resting and preparing for the coming season of growth, so are we! Among placing our seed orders and drafting our growing plans, we’re also getting ready to start up our 2026 CSA, and we’d love to invite you to share in our harvests this season.

We’ll be updating our pricing for 2026 - but not until February 14, which means there’s still plenty of time to sign up at the 2025 rate! We continue to offer shares at various sizes and seasons (spring, summer, and fall) so you can find an option that works best for you and your family.

In these dark times, its becoming more and more clear how important it is to build and connect with each other as a community. We’re grateful that our CSA can be a space for us all to gather and connect with each other every week throughout the season.

Visit joesbrookfarm.com/csa for more information and to sign up for your share, and we look forward to seeing you back around the farm soon. 🤍

As many of you know for the past 5 years, we’ve hired 3 farmers from Jamaica through the federal government’s H2A program.  Vermont farms and orchards hire somewhere around 500 Jamaicans every year to tend and harvest crops.

Godfrey, Delvin, and Ranaldo headed back to Jamaica on Monday, October 20th and immediately started doing everything they could to prepare for hurricane Melissa.  I’m sure most of you have seen the footage about the widespread destruction caused by this cat 5 storm. Communication has been spotty, but we have gotten word that all three of them are ok and surrounded by family.

Godfrey lives in the rural part of the island and says everything is mashed up. His crops have been wiped out by landslides, but he still has his house and some water. Ronaldo and Delvin (father and son) live by Montego Bay.  Last year their family lost their roof and their house suffered extensive damage after Beryl. They rebuilt their home with concrete and zinc and reported that it was still standing after the record breaking gusts of this hurricane.

Eric and I have been contemplating how to help.  Wiring money is the easiest and most welcome aid at this time. We will gratefully add any of your donations to the funds that we are sending to our workers in Jamaica. Even though they were not the hardest hit, they are helping friends and family rebuild their homes and neighborhoods. I have no doubt that money in their hands will make a difference to those around them. Anyone wishing to donate to Ronaldo, Godfrey and Delvin can send checks our way and we’ll pass them along (write Jamaica in the memo).

Thank you for listening. We will be missing you in a big way this coming Tuesday.

Warmly,
Mary and Eric and the farm crew
