We chopped corn silage this week. This is always an important, busy time of the year as it ensures we have a high quality, high quantity feed supply for our fat steers and also momma cows come the cold, snowy months of winter. Corn silage is a highly nutritious feed and provides abundant energy from starch and protein, as well as fiber and essential vitamins and minerals. It feels good to have this job done as we move into weaning spring born calves.

We’ve been busy at the BR trying to keep pastures & hay fields clean. Weeds thrive this time of year from all the heat and moisture. If not kept under control, weeds will rob a lot of moisture and nutrients from the soil that grasses depend on. I once heard that a cattlemen is primarily and most importantly a grass farmer. For without good grasses, a cattlemen would go broke trying to raise cattle solely on bought feed. We take great pride in clean, healthy grasslands.

Today we kicked out 4 bulls to 3 herds in 2 counties. 2026 Spring calving is already on our mind as we finished up AI (Artificial Insemenation) this week on a group of 34 of our top end females. Can’t wait to see the next generation of replacement females in 9 short months!

Last week we were able to harvest our Triticale haylage that we’ll feed our momma cows & feedlot this winter. We wrap it after baling which allows it to ferment. They will sure love this high protein feed source!

Blue River BEEF is undergoing a large water project, which consists of drilling a 204’ well and trenching in just over 9000’ of water line. This new project will supply fresh, clean water through several water hydrants and automatic drinkers, which will be meticulously placed in high traffic areas over 4 different paddocks on the West half of the ranch for our cow herd. Water is the single most important nutrient for BEEF production.

We hope to drill another well and construct another water supply phase on the Eastern half within the next year or two so we can completely get away from ponds to help with even higher conception rates, heavier weaning weights and overall better health for our cows.
