There are rare moments when I feel like I am making a difference in todays society when it comes to sustainable seafood. Today was one of those moments. I spent over an hour on the phone with fishermen in Yucatán to try to lend some knowledge to how we have developed a CSF and how they can use our model as a reference to developing one of their own. Fishermen in Yucatán are reeling from the impact of losing their markets/export outlets. Today offered small steps in the right direction, but those small steps have proven to be impactful. CSF’s or community supported fisheries are a vital part of a community and offer a countless amount of resources, information, and connections to be made. Support your local fishermen.

As we grow up, there are people in our lives that impact and shape the person we will become as we grow. Some odd 17 years ago, Ms. Farrell as my first grade teacher made me love learning. For a time she was responsible for my drive to want to teach. Although I’m not a teacher in the typical sense, last week I had the pleasure of teaching her 25 kiddos about the ocean. I’m happy to announce that I am now part of the Slow food urban San Diego ( ) team as a seafood liaison co-chair! I am looking forward to this new opportunity to connect more of San Diego to seafood and the fishing community.

No one said it would be easy, and the last few weeks have been busy and hectic as expected, but I have also learned that i have the drive to keep pushing. Being a woman in a male dominated industry has as you’d expect had its ups and downs but through those times I know that I have what it takes to succeed. I was told that “you have to be smarter, work harder, and be louder to compete”, and I’m doing just that. The dream is free to quit but it costs everything, I’m chasing mine as far, and as long as I can
