I started a new job at Stripe, as a full-time ✨writer✨. ā€œPlot twist!ā€ said Justin, my friend and longtime Dumpling Club supporter. In my newsletter, I share what considerations go into my career planning, that recipe for Hamburger Helper everyone asked me for, and Mid-Autumn wishes 🄮 from my daughter. Thank you to everyone who reached out after I wrote in my latest newsletter about how I’m handling racism in front of my kids. When something’s troubling me, I find myself turning more and more frequently to writing as a way to process my emotions. Sometimes talking to a friend or a family member can only take me so far (thank you though, I love you all for listening) and I can distill my thoughts better on paper.

I’m still adjusting to Substack as a medium, though, and I miss the immediacy of Instagram (feedback and comments right away when I post a story vs. fewer, more complex notes via email when I write on Substack). I’ll continue to experiment with what I share across both platforms… let me know if you have thoughts!

Also—I received a bunch of new subscribers, but if you’re looking for my newsletter, tap on the linktree in my profile and then tap the top button. I had to show my antisocial husband how to do this.. so, no shame šŸ˜†

I published a new newsletter today, and I think it’s the first issue in the last 5 years of writing that doesn’t have the word dumpling in it. Hopefully you still enjoy it?!

By request: 5 favorite spots to eat in Vienna, some thoughts on handling racism in front of my kids, and my best tip for surviving travel with little ones.

When I found this message in my fortune cookie last week, I cried. It’s true that I’m a lot less stressed now than I used to be, and I have more time for my kids and for my writing and music. Closing Dumpling Club was 100% the right decision for my health and for my family. But I’m still carrying my grief in many ways. And I guess when I saw this message, I cried because I felt… relieved. Because I hope the good times aren’t all behind me, I hope there’s more creativity and more passion and more adventure in what lies ahead. So if you’ve had to let go of something lately and it’s hit you hard, I hope this message finds you!

And if this doesn’t really apply to you, swipe for a photo of wontons. From me to you šŸ’›

The latest issue of my Substack went out today. I’ve been trying to write a bit each day, but to be honest the motivation comes in spurts. I’m beginning to understand more about my creative process, what my body likes and doesn’t like.

I know they say a picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes memories are more real to me, more alive and tangible in writing than they ever are in photo or video. Do you ever feel that way?

The first two screenshots are from my Asia trip diary part 1, and the second two screenshots are from today’s newsletter. If you want my recipes, I hope you’ll subscribe and bear with me through all my personal essays as well šŸ˜‰ Link in my bio, and you can subscribe to get it via email if you prefer.

What a lovely surprise to see Dumpling Club in again, and timely, as I reflect on 2023 and the year ahead. It never ceases to amaze me and humble me to see people celebrate my choices, especially ones that gave me a lot of heartache. When I made the announcement, 90% of my headspace was taken up with worry about disappointing people—I never expected to be received with such grace and warmth. I think it’s maybe telling… many of you have shared stories and messages about feeling burnt out in 2023. So my wish for me is also what I wish for you: may 2024 be full of self-care, better mental health, good food, and lots of love and laughter with the ones that matter most.

Thanks for the recognition šŸ’›
