San Francisco Sea Forager tour guide Kirk Lombard has been teaching scores of people how to forage for seafood and protect our fragile fisheries. At the end of every tour he is inevitably asked, “if I don’t have time to catch it, where can I buy sustainable fish?” Tired of explaining why there isn’t one simple answer, Lombard has created one: Sea Forager Seafood, a Community Supported Seafood (CSS

) membership program that provides fresh, sustainable seafood every week at pickup locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. More than just seafood, Lombard offers an educational experience, including a monthly fish party where people are encouraged to get out of the kitchen and meet the fishermen, sample seasonal seafood, sing along to sea chanteys, and learn about their fish from a man who loves to talk (and sing) about it. Lombard also includes a ticket to his walking tours with each sign-up, so that members can get a more in-depth understanding of local seafood and how to find and protect it. On October 20th, my debut novel, THE SHADOW STREAM, is officially hitting the shelves via Enchanted Lion Books!

Unlike my guide book, this is a throwback to the great, family-read-aloud epics we used to devour (think Watership Down meets Holes).

It follows a confused trout with a big heart, an intellectual bullhead, a killer raccoon, a drunken deer and a forgotten boy trapped in institutional purgatory as they try to stop a river from being dammed. It’s a story about how saving nature is, ultimately, how we save ourselves.

Thanks to Captain Anthony Ferrari aboard the F/V Spellbound for reeling in tonight's sablefish! Here he is at the pier with his daughter after delivering his catch. ! 🎣

To be clear, sablefish fishing is no easy task. The guys have to go way off shore (2-4 days) and each line or trap is baited, and a single snag, wherein they lose their gear, costs them thousands of dollars. Also consider that if the weather changes, the swell picks up, or anything goes wrong with their boat, they are a full day from a safe harbor. I only point this out so that we don't take the fish or the fishermen for granted. 🙏

What's cooking? Albacore Tuna Tenderloin pan seared with garlic, ginger, shallots, and furikake topped with chopped green onion from Sea Forager member Joshua Swan. And Marvelous Ligurian mussel ragù by 💪

Our beautiful albacore tuna were reeled in by Captain Bruce Martinelli and his wife Pilar, F/V Tantrum No. 1 way offshore of the coasts of Oregon, Washington and BC using rod and reel using troll gear as opposed to the gigantic Pelagic long liners that are so destructive.

Now THAT was fun! Thanks to everyone for coming out to Sea Forager's 12th birthday party at and super thanks to for hosting us at their Apocalypse Sunday event.

If it's the end of the world as we know it, belting out sea shanties is definitely the way to go!

It being San Francisco, we had to park many blocks away. On the walk we got to appreciate the SF skyline and the gift of running a sustainable seafood business in this beautiful city. We love you, San Francisco! Thanks to all the fishermen and home cooks who make it possible.
