It's not "just a job." Be part of the original raw feeding community; SFRAW has been independently owned/operated and member supported since 2003. We make the world's best raw food in "made to order" small batches right here in San Francisco. We're honored to work with amazing regenerative farmers and support local independent food.

We have three full-time and part-time positions open:

• Production Assistants (Mon-Thurs evening shifts with occasional day shift hours)
• Customer Service staff: Member Care & Store Specialists (this position requires certification in raw feeding & significant experience feeding fresh foods to dogs/cats)

We offer good pay and generous benefits, including Kaiser health, dental and vision, a 401(k), pet health insurance, paid time off, a 48% employee discount, a monthly shop/grocery stipend, free healthy food/drink during your shift, and paid education/certifications.

We're looking for hardworking, reliable, friendly and mature people who love animals and natural foods, enjoy staying physically active, and who can thrive on a small but mighty team. Experience in a small business, kitchen, grocery store, food prep or customer service is a big plus.

Must love dogs.

Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib talked about a study published in the Journal of Animal Science comparing five processing approaches in healthy adult dogs using a crossover design, so each dog ate every diet. The forms compared were:

♨️High-heat retorted pouch food.
🔥Sous-vide/mildly cooked food.
🔥Steamed food.
💎HPP-treated raw food.
🥶HPP-treated, freeze-dried food.

The new peer-reviewed dog-food study was designed to isolate the effects of five processing methods using the very same ingredient base. The main finding is that how food is processed meaningfully affects digestibility, stool output, fermentation byproducts, and the f***l microbiome.

Key takeaways:

☝️This study did not include fresh/frozen raw food when comparing the differently processed methods.

💎♨️HPP processed raw food had essentially the same outcome/results as the heat processed (cooked) food diet. HPP performed the best in comparison to the other food processing methods, but was very nearly the same as the cooked food.

This outcome supports why we do not consider HPP foods raw. Indeed, we think HPP is actually a health risk that, logically and very likely would increase the risk of pathogens, and have a negative impact on the microbiome. We do not categorize HPP as raw or "minimally processed". We do not sell nor recommend feeding HPP processed foods.

♨️🔥Freeze-dried "raw" performed very poorly. The reason surprised Dr. Becker, Rodney and may surprise you: commercially freeze-dried foods are not raw. They are not simply flash frozen/kept cold during processing. Firstly, freeze-dried food is subjected to HPP. Then it goes through two additional processing steps that involves cooking at low temperatures for extended periods of time (165 degrees for 10 hours, then 140 degrees for another 8 hours). In light of these findings, the researchers suggest that freeze-dried foods should not be referred to as "raw".

There's much more to learn, this clip only highlights what we thought were important takeaways.

Join the SFRAW team!

Looking for a mature, responsible, dependable, physically capable & fun, hardworking rockstar who believes in what we're doing! (Ideally, we're hoping a fellow SFRAW Member will apply!)

Awesome benefits, great people & good pay!

Few things:

This is a physically demanding job - with lots of heavy lifting and repetitive movement involved every day - old injuries will be an issue. You will be on your feet and active during the entirety of your shift.

Personal cellphone use is not permitted during your shift (obviously, breaks are yours/your time to scroll freely!) Lots of people these days seem to have a serious addiction to their phones, so please understand that's not going to be a good fit here.

Please be honest about your suitability for this position before applying.

Oh - you absolutely must love dogs 🐕 especially giant ones! 💗

Send your letter of interest, any relevant experience/certifications (you'll need ServSafe food handlers certificate), glowing references, and a solid work history to: [email protected]

We can't wait to meet you! ✨️

Reposted from Proactive Paws 🚨 A HUGE NEW STUDY IS CHALLENGING WHAT PET PARENTS HAVE BEEN TOLD ABOUT GRAIN-FREE DOG FOOD.

A 2026 Veterinary Medicine and Science study analyzed Dog Aging Project data from 47,000+ dogs and found grain-free diets were NOT associated with increased odds of developing new heart problems.

🤯 More than HALF of owners who reported feeding grain-free were WRONG when researchers checked the ingredients. Foods that sounded grain-free actually contained rice, corn, wheat, barley or oats.

Researchers also followed 7,113 dogs for two years. Dogs that switched to grain-free had FEWER newly reported heart diagnoses than dogs that never ate grain-free, while dogs consistently eating grain-free showed no significant difference.

Both grain-free AND grain-containing foods can contribute to nutritional DCM. So can poorly formulated raw and homemade diets.

Peas, lentils and potatoes aren’t inherently “bad,” and adding grains does NOT magically make food cardioprotective—there’s ZERO taurine in grains!

The bigger question is whether the finished food provides enough bioavailable protein and essential amino acids for the dog eating it.

And here’s the overlooked problem: AAFCO “all life stages” foods meet nutrient requirements for growth and reproduction, but adult dogs often need far fewer calories than growing puppies.

So owners feed less to prevent obesity. But when you cut food, you don’t just cut calories—you cut protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals too.

A food can meet AAFCO requirements on paper, yet a lower-calorie dog eating less receives less of EVERY nutrient, not to mention some dogs genetically don’t make enough taurine for heart health.

🐕 The question isn’t “grain-free or grain-inclusive?”

It’s: Is THIS dog getting enough protein, essential amino acids and other critical nutrients for the calories they actually consume? That’s the nutritional DCM conversation we should be having.

Calories change. Nutrient needs don’t.

I started feeding raw in 1988 to my sick 9 year old cat who was given 3 months to live. I read Dr. Pitcarins book and immediately realized - everything I had been doing was wrong, as a lifetime animal lover/rescuer who was a pre-vet student/working as a vet assistant (& equestrian) and following all the best vet recommendations at the time. I switched her to raw, found Anitra Fraizers book, and then Juliette di Baircly Levy's book - this truly changed everything for me.

My cat not only lived, she had become the healthiest she had EVER been and went on to live to 22 yrs, never having another sick day or need a vet's care again.

Because of this experience, I dropped out of school/vet training, moved to 40 acers "off the grid" to deepen/practice/self educate about Natural Rearing and raw feeding while doing wildlife rescue. Adopted my first Great Dane in 1991.

All thanks to Juliette di Baircly Levy, who's writings impacted me the most. Many of my products were developed as a result of her teachings.

Yes, I also had Wendy Volhard's early booklets (still have them!) & dabbled w/ her recipes, but the grains were problematic for my dogs. So, I kept applying what worked over generations of dogs, cats, rescues and developed my own protocols that worked the best for my animals over decades. apothecarybysfraw

Such a great clip! Cheers to the OP, Jane! 👏

What I love about this story is that Wendy didn’t just have one experience and move on.

She spent decades studying nutrition, herbs and natural rearing for dogs.

Stories like this are exactly why I believe we should be looking at herbs for the WHOLE family, including the four-legged members. 🐶

We have specific reduced-alcohol versions of some of our herbal formulas for pets, including LDM-100, Essiac-20 and Clarkia-100, along with Luci’s Salve for topical use.
