Urban Pastoral Gardens

Urban Pastoral Gardens Grow your own fresh produce because you can! Not all of us have backyard space to grow our own food in cities. Julie Gesin and Nicholas Leaskou

Urban Pastoral Gardens is a perfect solution for San Francisco residents interested in growing their own organic whole foods. Planted in lightweight and portable containers—made of recycled materials in the USA—our gardens make urban farming possible on a fire escape, balcony, porch, or even windowsill. Choose from a seasonal selection of vegetables and edible flowers on the Urban Pastoral Gardens

website and your garden will be delivered right to your door. Our edible gardens are fun to grow, make great gifts, and are delicious to eat. Currently we're delivering to San Francisco residents only, but we'll be coming to a Farmers' Market near you soon. Please check our website for more details and updates.

Winter Update!

We’re back with Winter Greens and enjoying a sunny respite after a long period of rain and wind. Though this winter is turning out to be a cool and wet one so far, tender leafy greens are thriving—and violas are back!

This recently planted Winter Greens garden (Sold!) includes garlic, red heirloom lettuce, swiss chard, kale “Lacinato Rainbow,” parsley, and the centerpiece is a penny orange viola.

Not only because they are bright and add a splash of orange or yellow to our portable gardens, but we also include calendulas because their petals are edible and can be used to add color and subtle spice to salads or rice as a saffron substitute...

Get Dirty
For most of my adult life I’ve lived in apartments, which usually offer restricted gardening space, if any. Even when I worked full time landscaping gardens for other people, I came home to a little more than a series of window boxes or a fire escape.

After switching to graphic design – I always managed to create some type of garden no matter how small. It wasn’t just a hobby or an aesthetic addition to my environment: it was therapeutic. I often felt that being in contact with the Earth kept me happy and sane. I was very happy to find out that there is science behind my need for getting my hands dirty.

SF Event Reminder:

Tomorrow, 8/12, from 11am-3pm, we'll be joining Phoenix Books in Noe Valley for a collaborative sidewalk sale.

There'll be a variety of gardening books to check out, plus you'll get to meet a few of our edible gardens (see our Summer Garden Sale @ Phoenix Books album) in person! And yes you'll be able to touch--our greens are soft.

We'll also have some empty planters on hand as well and will be available to answer any questions about how we plant and maintain our gardens. Please stop by if you're in the neighborhood!
