Resting cabbages. A quiet pause before they become kimchi.

A friend sent me pics of their homegrown cabbages for Gimjang.

I've been in a similar state for the past week resting, eating, taking walks, and soaking up time with family and friends.

Good things take time, after all. They rest, soften, and transform.

I'm grateful for our community and all the things we're creating together.

Wishing you a New Year filled with ease, flavor, and moments worth treasuring.

Super excited to share our first Volcano Kimchi Fermentation Zine, We Ferment To Be Together 😍

This zine truly came to life thanks to two incredible local artists:
Illustration: Sora Lee
Design: Lisa Mishima

I love collaborating with local creatives, building community through what we make and what we do feels genuinely magical and meaningful.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays ❤️💕😘

Ten years in, still small, still slow.
It is still fermenting with hands, jars, and people who care about how food—and money—move.

I grew up with crocks and clay ongi as my first teachers. They taught me that food takes time, seasons matter, and what we share at the table shapes how we feel about being alive together.

When I came to America, I missed the flavors. But even more, I missed the feeling of reaching into the same bowl, eating together.

A few jars at a market became Volcano Kimchi. What’s grown most isn’t production—it’s the community around the jars. Kids growing up on our kimchi. Returned jars with stories. And the reminder from my husband:
“Kimchi is not meant to be eaten alone, but to be shared.”

Small food means tight cash and big heart. That’s why being invited by Slow Money mattered. They believe food and finance should both grow in community. So do we.

Thanks to everyone who showed up—especially the farmers, organizers, and slow eaters who make this kind of gathering possible.

Thanks to Veggielution Farm — an urban educational farm in San Jose that grows food and community through hands-on programs, markets, and youth education.

And Philosopher Foods — Tim, the inspiring and creative founder making gut-friendly fermented nut snacks and his two joyful kids who brought so much heart to the day.

We ferment to be together. 💛

This Thursday we’re doing a small Kimjang at — a hands-on kimchi workshop followed by an all-things-kimchi dinner party.

We’ll make traditional pogi kimchi and very seasonal persimmon kimchi, then sit down together for suyuk & kimchi and makgeoli, and good conversation.

I’ve always loved the way Kimjang in Korea brings neighbors together to make enough kimchi to carry everyone through winter. This night is a tiny version of that — many hands, one table.

We still have a few seats open, so if this feels like your kind of Thursday night, we’d love to have you.

Happy Halloween 🎃

Sunny once ran .sf —the Japanese-style bathhouse + sweetest little restaurant in SF. During the pandemic he moved to Pescadero, put his hands in the soil, and this week rolled up with an 808-lb pumpkin that took the Coastside win. Somewhere up in Santa Rosa, a 2,400-lb unit reminded us there’s always a bigger gourd out there.

I didn’t grow up with Halloween in Korea—no porch lights, no costumes—but here, year by year, the spirit finds me: neighbors laughing in the fog, kids in capes, farmers hauling suns on vines. I’m becoming American one giant pumpkin at a time, and honestly…I love it. 🧡

Drop a 🎃 for Sunny and tell me which pumpkin stole your heart.

Gathering with women who build from the ground up — with courage, creativity, and conviction.

I’m joining for an evening of honest conversation, founder stories, and fermented delights. We’ll be serving juicy watermelon kimchi, fermented cocktails, and a warm bowl of hommy bibimbap.

There are just a few spots left — grab your ticket through the link in ’s bio. Let’s remind each other: you’re not building alone.
