FOUNDER UPDATE: Thank you all for ten years of supporting Proper Pepper Pimento Cheese. My accidental entrepreneurship in the food business has been a whirlwind of learning experiences, and it truly was so much fun to use my creative spirit to try and build something from nothing. I’ve had some proud victories, a lot of missteps, occasional tears, plenty of high fives and many wonderful opportunities to meet strangers who have become friends over a dollop of pimento cheese.
A couple years ago, as I attempted to scale my business, I made a desperate decision to accept an equity partner. We thought it would be better to own the majority of something rather than 100% of nothing. This was my greatest misstep. We chose the wrong partner, and Proper Pepper has now gone awry. It’s hard to sum up this state of the business in a few sentences. Just know it has been very complicated. Starting a company is moving from one setback to the next with enthusiasm, but our setbacks (and differences of opinion) outnumbered our moving forward. My saving grace is accepting that sometimes, rejection is God’s protection.
Each time I leave my 93-year-old mom’s home, I say, “Bye Mama”, and she quickly responds with “I’m not saying bye, just so long”. The feelings are similar for this product that I love so much. I don’t want to say bye. I’ve grieved for 18 months and it still feels raw to type these words. I launched Proper Pepper the week I celebrated turning 50. Yesterday, I turned 60. The company has failed, but I have not. As writes, every open and closed door is a gift when the Shepherd is leading you. Only He knows what my 60s hold!
No doubt, Proper Pepper showed incredible promise, and to this day, I will boldly and confidently put it up against any pimento cheese on the market. THIS is why I’m not saying goodbye!
This page will remain, but the platform name on Instagram is changing to Deana Tanner Bibb and will feature my extraordinary, ordinary life in Sandersville, GA as I share, sell and inquire about the people and things I love. Feel free to reach out if you’re on the brink of making a desperate decision or if you want to chat pimento cheese.
So long!
