Garden going in little by little. Corner L-shaped bed built today with dirt installed in half of it. Built completely out of 2x6 that we salvaged from the trash dumpster during the house build! Yep dumpster dove at our own house (hey, we paid for it might as well salvage it).

Beans, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower planted in another bed are growing well! The last bed is having some issues… I think I covered the seed tape with too much dirt. I may restart, add more dirt, and replant.

I’m excited to watch the garden grow!

Garden tour - It took me all day, but I got the fence up around the garden area! And a gate!! This is something that has been on my list for a couple years now!! Last year’s small garden was in too much shade, so everything moved… and got bigger. It’s still in early stages and fall garden isn’t completely planted yet. But A FENCE!!!

Looking forward to how the garden evolves and grows!!

Tractor Supply Co. in League City at Highway 3 near 646 is open for business. Come out next week 10/17 for their Grand Opening celebration! We will be a vendor along with The Blue Barndo Microfarmat the Grand Opening!! Come see their new shiny store, meet local vendors, get some local honey, fresh eggs, and beautiful cut flowers!!

Did something a little different this weekend - took a basic knife skills class at College of Mainland culinary continuing education. I really didn’t know what to expect, but it was fun! We made 3 recipes that focused on different types of knife skills!

1) chicken sautéed in onions, garlic, and tomatoes - learned how to break down a whole chicken, fine dice onions, and mince garlic
2) Ratatouille - this focused on even thin slices of vegetables to layer on top of the sauce.
3) Chicken pot pie - used the rest of the chicken and focused on large dice of vegetables. (We ran out of time so I’m finishing this up today for lunches this week).

We got to take home all the food, extra cut veg, and a pairing knife. It was fun and something different!

Super excited to be officially enrolled in the Texas Master Beekeeper program! I’ll be taking my Apprentice Exam in November.

The more I have learned about TAMU Agrilife Extension and their Apicultue program the more I have been incredibly impressed. They have done a fantastic job with outreach to the beekeeping community and the curriculum in this program is definitely beneficial to beekeepers. Learning the information will make me a better beekeeper!!

Even more than that the TMBP is very geared toward service - every additional level requires public service hours as the programs core tenants are to have advanced/master/master craftsman be advocates and ambassadors for bees and pollinators to the beekeeper/farmer community and to the general public. That 100% resonates with what I wanted to do with our minifarm - advocate and outreach for the science in why we make the decision we do on our farm.

I’m really looking forward to this program and all I have to learn and share!! Sorry (not sorry) in advance for all the interesting bee info that is coming!!

Thank you Houston Plant Market! So much fun! We SOLD OUT of 9 dozen eggs again this market and had a lot of fun talking to people!

Officially rolling out Fairlane Farms reusable native bee houses at tomorrow’s Houston Plant Market at Bad Astronaut Brewery! Anyone can support native cavity-nesting bees with one of these houses. They can easily go in your garden, on a fence post, or even on a balcony with plants! Native bees make brood cells and lay their eggs with pollen to grow, pupate over winter, and emerge in the spring!! Native bees are great pollinators and can reuse the house year after year.

As always we will have honey and pasture raised eggs! Looking forward to the plant market!

Early morning fall garden planning before goat chores and leaving for work! I finally did it and signed up for the ! I’ve been looking at this for probably about a year (seriously…) but had to get some other projects finished before pulling that trigger. The first box did not disappoint - 6 different fall seed tapes, fertilizer, and a heavy duty trowel! When is my October box going to get here!?!? 😂😂

I’m really excited to get my fall garden planted! Fall/winter project is really going to be to plan and build the fancy garden I have always wanted.

Today is the day!! 11am at Jimbo’s Nursery

A big part of my vision for Fairlane Farms is community outreach and being a STEM advocate to the community. I wanted to communicate the science behind the things we do and decisions we make with our mini farm.

It is an understatement to say I’m excited about getting to talk to the community today about bees and honey!! I’m REALLY REALLY EXCITED!!!

I’m thankful to all the support I have had from family, friends, and especially my husband, Josh. It’s been a lot to get here and today is only the beginning!!!
