The mystery food was... Organic Horseradish!

This time around, we stumped everyone! Despite some creative guesses, nobody was able to correctly identify this week's challenge. Don't worry—we'll have plenty more chances to test your food knowledge in future rounds. Better luck next time! 💚

Horseradish may not be the first ingredient that comes to mind when you think of everyday produce, but this humble root has a long history and a flavor that's impossible to forget. Part of the brassica family, which includes mustard, cabbage, and broccoli, horseradish is known for its sharp, peppery bite.

Interestingly, the root doesn't have much aroma until it's cut or grated. Once broken open, natural compounds are released that create the bold heat horseradish is famous for.

While many people know horseradish as a condiment served alongside roast beef or mixed into cocktail sauce, fresh horseradish can be used in a variety of ways.

It adds a flavorful kick to mashed potatoes, salad dressings, dips, grain bowls, roasted vegetables, sandwiches, and even homemade sauces. A little goes a long way!

Looking for a delicious way to use fresh horseradish at home? Try this simple recipe:

✨ Creamy Horseradish Sauce ✨

Ingredients:
• 2 tablespoons freshly grated organic horseradish
• ½ cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
• 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
• Pinch of sea salt
• Fresh cracked black pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Grate the horseradish root using a fine grater.
2. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.
3. Let the sauce rest in the refrigerator for 15–30 minutes to allow the flavors to come together.
4. Serve with roasted vegetables, baked potatoes, sandwiches, burgers, grain bowls, or your favorite protein.

The result is creamy, tangy, and packed with fresh horseradish flavor.

Thank you to everyone who participated and shared your guesses. One of our favorite parts of is introducing unique ingredients, sparking curiosity, and celebrating the incredible variety of foods available through our co-op.

Whether you guessed correctly or not, we hope you learned something new and discovered an ingredient you might be inspired to try.

Keep an eye out for the next challenge coming soon. Maybe the next mystery food will be a little easier... or maybe not. 😉🌿💚

Co-op community — we want to take a moment to address the recent parking changes at our Nob Hill location and share an update with everyone. 💚

First and foremost, thank you to everyone who has reached out, shared concerns, asked questions, and continued showing up for our co-op during this transition. We know these changes have been frustrating and disappointing for many longtime shoppers, neighbors, and community members.

We’ve heard your feedback clearly, and we understand how much accessibility and convenience matter when it comes to everyday grocery shopping in Nob Hill.

Over the past several weeks, our team has been in conversations with the property owners to advocate for our customers and help make shopping at La Montañita more accessible.

We’re grateful we were able to secure free daily parking from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Nob Hill lot.

(While updated signage is still being installed in the coming weeks, the parking areas are currently not being actively monitored during those morning hours.)

In addition, after 11 a.m., shoppers can still receive one free hour of parking by using the QR code posted in the lot.

We know this does not completely eliminate the concerns many people have expressed, but we hope it helps make visiting the co-op easier — especially for morning shoppers, quick grocery trips, coffee runs, and community members stopping in for breakfast, lunch, or fresh local groceries.

For nearly 50 years, La Montañita has been part of the Nob Hill community. We’ve always believed a grocery store can be more than just a place to shop. It can be a place where neighbors connect, where local farmers and producers are supported, where healthy food is accessible, and where community matters. That mission has not changed.

Our team remains committed to helping customers navigate the parking process and making everyone feel welcome when they walk through our doors. If you have questions while visiting the store, please don’t hesitate to ask one of our staff members for help.

Whether you come to La Montañita for local produce, organic groceries, wellness products, fresh baked goods, grab-and-go meals, or simply to support local business in Albuquerque, we want you to know how much your support means to us.

Thank you for continuing to support community-owned business, local food systems, and your neighborhood co-op here in Nob Hill. We truly appreciate this community and look forward to continuing to serve you.

What is a co-op?

A co-op, short for cooperative, is a business owned by the community it serves. Instead of being controlled by outside shareholders or a large corporation, a co-op is built around people coming together to support something they believe in.

At La Montañita Food Co-op, our members help support a grocery store focused on fresh local food, organic products, sustainability, and strengthening our local economy. 🌻

This year, we’re celebrating 50 years of community ownership, and we’re proud to continue growing alongside the people and communities who helped build the Co-op from the very beginning.

One thing many people don’t realize is that anyone can shop at La Montañita Food Co-op. Membership is not required to walk through our doors and enjoy everything we offer. Everyone is welcome.

Our stores are filled with fresh produce, local New Mexico products, bulk foods, wellness items, prepared foods, and organic groceries carefully selected with our community in mind. When you shop at the Co-op, you’re also helping support local farmers, ranchers, makers, and small businesses throughout the region.

For those who choose to become members, membership is a way to take a deeper role in supporting the Co-op’s mission. Members help own the store alongside their neighbors, receive additional discounts, and invest in a business model centered around people, not profits alone.

For five decades, La Montañita Food Co-op has believed food can do more than fill carts — it can connect communities, support local agriculture, and create positive change.

With 4 locations across New Mexico, we’re honored to continue that work together.

Come see what good food can do. 💛

Some of our strongest memories live in the kitchen.

The sound of someone cooking before the rest of the house wakes up.

Measuring ingredients together. Learning recipes without written instructions.

Conversations shared over cutting boards, mixing bowls, and meals made with care.

This Mother’s Day, as we close out our Mothering the Community series, we’re reflecting on the ways food connects generations—and how recipes can become living pieces of family history.

Longtime La Montañita Food Co-op member Bryn Naranjo shared one of those recipes with us: Elsies Cake, a family recipe passed down from her mother, who learned it from her mother before her.

“My mom got this recipe from her mom, who got it from her family friend’s mother named Elsie.”

That kind of sharing—through food, tradition, and time spent together—is one of the many ways mothering lives on.

For 50 years, La Montañita has been honored to be part of these moments in our community. From ingredients gathered for family meals to recipes carried across generations, we believe food is deeply connected to care, memory, and belonging.

Today, we celebrate all the people who nurture others through loving acts both big and small—and all the ways those acts continue to ripple outward over time.

We also recognize that Mother’s Day can hold many emotions. Whether today is joyful, difficult, reflective, or quiet, we’re sending care to everyone in our community.

Thank you for sharing your stories with us this week. 💛

Bryn’s Family Recipe — Elsies Cake

1/2 lb butter
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 pint sour cream
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda

Filling/Topping:
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup nuts

Add sour cream, butter and sugar together. Add eggs and vanilla. Sift flour, baking soda, and baking powder together. Alternate adding dry ingredients and sour cream into sugar mixture until combined.

Grease a tube pan. Add some filling to the bottom, then alternate layers of batter and filling.

Bake at 350° for approximately 1 hour.

Mothering can be found in the ways we care for the people, places, and living things around us every day.

For 50 years, La Montañita has grown through the dedication of people who believe that community care and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.

As part of our Mothering the Community series, we’re honored to highlight one of those people: longtime staff member and Board of Directors member Annamarie Stull, our Promotional Coordinator.

Annamarie has been part of the co-op community for many years, helping shape the welcoming and community-centered spirit that so many people associate with La Montañita.

When we asked how she nurtures the planet, she shared:

“I nurture my planet by using sustainable and compostable products as much as I can. I nurture my planet by using natural pest control. I try to car pool if possible. I try to protect bees so plants can thrive.”

Her answer reflects something deeply connected to the values our co-op has carried for decades: the understanding that care for the Earth often happens through consistent, intentional everyday actions.

When asked what “mothering” means to her, Annamarie said:

“Mothering to me is nurturing and caring not just of people but of all things including animals, plants, etc. Mothering also means giving a sense of protection and support through loving acts.”

At La Montañita, we believe those loving acts—whether toward people, pollinators, plants, or community spaces—help create a stronger, healthier future for everyone.

As we celebrate 50 years of La Montañita Food Co-op community, we’re grateful for people like Annamarie whose care, creativity, and commitment continue to nurture the world around them.

Mothering can take many forms.

Sometimes it looks like preparing meals, sharing knowledge, or caring for the people around us. And sometimes, it looks like tending the land itself—protecting ecosystems, caring for animals, and making sure future generations inherit healthy soil and thriving grasslands.

For 50 years, La Montañita Food Co-op has been rooted in the belief that community care starts with our connection to the Earth and to the people who grow and raise our food. That commitment continues through partnerships with farmers and ranchers who approach their work with stewardship, responsibility, and long-term care in mind.

As part of our Mothering the Community series, we’re highlighting the people whose work nourishes our communities every day.

Daniel Unruh of Red Barn Ranch in Las Vegas, New Mexico, is part of the Sweet Grass Cooperative , a network committed to regenerative ranching practices that work in harmony with the land.

This is what Daniel said when we asked what caring for community means to them:

“Being involved in producing a wholesome, healthy food product for our community.”

That sense of care extends beyond the food itself. Through regenerative grazing methods, Red Barn Ranch works to rebuild healthy soil and restore grasslands by working with natural cycles.

“Using the cattle as the bison of old to regenerate the soil and grasslands.”

This approach reflects a deep understanding that healthy land, healthy animals, and healthy communities are all connected.

For Daniel, “mothering” is rooted in stewardship:

“Being not only stewards of the Earth, but also of the animals.”

As we reflect on 50 years of La Montañita, we’re grateful for producers like Red Barn Ranch who continue to embody the values our co-op was built on—care for the land, care for community, and responsibility to future generations.

This is the kind of work that sustains communities not just for today, but for decades to come.
