TAACL Farm

TAACL Farm Small, family owned, chicken farm. Fresh eggs for sale!

06/14/2023

ATTENTION:

Due to unfortunate circumstances, we will not have eggs for sale until probably July-August.

We've had, what we believe, are several predators take most of our flock. We have some hens that were hatched in February and another batch that was hatched last month, so hopefully not too long before we have more eggs.

Sorry for this inconvenience! It's been very difficult for us. We appreciate your understanding, business, and continued support!

My prices are figured from my feed costs not supply and demand. If the feed prices come down, the price comes down. Feel free to reach out if you're interested!

Fall coop cleaning complete! As I was finishing up some hens were pecking at the coop door wanting in. As soon as I opened it they jumped into the nesting boxes to start laying.

Think the eggs you buy from the store are fresh? Think again! In the United States, some washed commercial eggs look shiny and new, but the average egg in the grocery store can actually be up to 8 weeks old by the time you buy it (I’d look shiny and new, too, if I’d been sprayed with mineral oil!).

I do wash the eggs we sell, but unwashed eggs are available upon request!

Over the past couple weeks I've had a few friends ask me "how long do farm fresh eggs stay good for?" It's a great question and I'm sure a lot of people have wondered the same thing. Here's some interesting info that may give you a better idea.

As a general rule, unwashed eggs will last around two weeks unrefrigerated and about three months or more in your refrigerator. This is because when a hen makes an egg there is an invisible layer on the outside of the shell called a bloom. That bloom is why farm fresh is best!

What Is The Egg Bloom?
-From The Picky Eater Blog

The protective bloom is the outermost layer of an egg’s shell, applied last before the hen lays the egg. It’s possible you may have heard it referred to as the cuticle. In a nutshell, it’s a protein-rich foamy layer that surrounds the egg.

This protective coating is the egg’s first line of defense against air and bacteria. Because the egg shell has a porous shell, washing your eggs immediately after collecting them removes that natural barrier.

The protective layer bloom helps prevent bacteria from entering the egg white via the shell. It also helps keep the egg fresher for longer by limiting the flow of air through the eggshell pores.

Commercial egg producers spray the eggs with a chemical sanitizer before packaging them to decrease the possibility of bacteria like salmonella contaminating the egg. The eggs are then washed, and the bloom is removed, leaving the egg pores accessible to new bacteria.
