🌱 Brandnetel Kaas 🌱

You can call it "Stinging nettle cheese" in English. This Belgian cow's milk cheese comes to us from the same folks making everybody's favorite Gouda, OG Kristal. Brandnetel Kaas is made with pasteurized cow's milk and is studded with dried nettles. It is made similar to goudas, as a washed-curd recipe cheese, and has a texture like a young Gouda: creamy-firm, bouncy and sliceable.

We were taken aback by the flavor of this cheese: it's deeply savory, reminding us of braised beef stew and birria consommé.

This banger was included in our August Cheese of the Month Club release, but we have some on-hand to sell in the shop, as well. It's definitely one to check out next time you are in!

We will be OPEN this Sunday (tomorrow! August 16!) for the Homer Summer Market, 10am-2pm.

restaurant homer is hosting their second annual summer market with artisans and local craftspeople. We will be open for the entirety of the market, Hey Jude Goods will open early at 10 for the market, and Little Thing will be open as well. This is a great opportunity to shop local and support vendors in your neighborhood. While you're at it you can hit up The Coupe & Flute or Oak Restaurant & Bar for brunch and make a whole morning out of it.

If you have ever petitioned for us to be open on a Sunday, this is your chance to show up. 👀Typically when we have been open on a Sunday in the past, sales have been so meager that they weren't enough to pay for even a portion of the cost of being open. Show us what a busy Sunday morning in Beacon Hill could look like, y'all. 😘

Hot Cheese Happy Hour is every Thursdayfrom 3-6pm--and we are changing things up for the last weeks of summer.

Instead of Raclette, we are now serving grilled Halloumi plates. Halloumi is the traditional cheese of Cyprus, and it's a non-melting cheese that grills beautifully. For our halloumi plates, we are currently using the Helena halloumi from Tieton Farm & Creamery in Tieton, Washington. Helena Halloumi is made with a blend of sheep and goat's milks, just like authentic Halloumi in Cyprus.

We are grilling up the Halloumi to-order and serving at with stone fruit, spicy pepper jam, and salami. (Meatless option also available.) Come see us from 3-6pm today to get yours!

Spice Waala is an Indian street food restaurant in Seattle with locations in Capitol Hill, Ballard and Columbia City neighborhoods. They serve authentic flavors from the streets of Calcutta & New Delhi and we are lucky enough to get to carry their chutneys, chili crunch and mango pickle in our store 🤤

The Tamarind Chutney is a delicate sweet and savory spice mix that compliments a variety of foods. Use it as a dipping sauce, salad dressing, or to coat food items. In cheese pairing, try it with an aged Gouda, an Alpine-style cheese, or a buttery triple cream bloomy-rind cheese.

The Cilantro Chutney is so good that The Seattle Times once wrote, “is so good, you’ll want to dip your life into it.” Made with cilantro, onion, garlic, chili peppers & salt - this chutney is your perfect addition to any meal. We want to pair it with cheeses like Mrs. Kirkham’s Lancashire, a soft, fresh cheese, or Mozzarella di Bufala.

Spice Waala’s take on chili crunch is flavorful, crunchy, and really brings the heat. While more traditional takes might be to use this on lentils, eggs, pizza, rice dishes, or ice cream, we would pair this Chili Crunch with soft, fresh cheeses like Shepherd’s Hope and Crescendo, drizzle it over a plump little ball of Burrata, or use it top an Alpine-style cheese like Pleasant Ridge Reserve or Comte.

Finally, Mango pickle is a delicious Indian condiment traditionally made from green mangos in a blend of spices. According to Spice Waala, “Mango Pickle (aka Achar) is a beautiful blend of spices, sweetness and the tangy unripen mango. Use it to spice up any meal from a simple lentil stew to salads and anything in between. Every home in India has their own recipe for achar and we are proud to present you ours.” Spice Waala’s Mango Pickle has a lovely appearance and thinly sliced texture, and it brings some bangin’ heat (as in spiciness!)

We especially love Mango Pickle paired with English milled-curd cheeses like Mrs. Kirkham’s Lancashire, Isle of Mull Cheddar, and Urban Stead’s Street Ched Clothbound cheddar, of which we just brought a wheel into the shop!

Spice up your summer meals or cheese plates with any of these Spice Waala pantry staples 🥭

✨️ Rind appreciation post ✨️

How gorgeous is this side rind? This is our current wheel of Alfred Le Fermier from Fromagerie La Station in Quebec, Canada. One of the prettiest cheese rinds we've cut into in a while. 😍

Have you tried Alfred yet? We're down to about a quarter of a wheel now, so you might want to hurry in to nab some of this award-winning Alpine-style cheese before it's gone. Yes, it tastes even better than it looks! 🤤

You can read more about it (and even pre-order a wedge!) through our online shop. Just head to the link in our bio to get there. Or you can come into the shop and request it in person. We are open Tuesday through Friday, 12-7pm, and Saturday 11a-6p. Closed Sunday and Monday.

One year ago today, we made a big, scary step in our business' life cycle: we told people we were soft-opening our brick-and-mortar shop, we unlocked the door and invited people to come shopping for cheese and cheese accessories. The first customer that day was a resident of the apartment complex behind us. People came in from Little Thing Wine to get cheese to pair with their wine. Folks waiting in line to eat at Homer wandered in to see what we were about.

Two weeks before that, we had been sitting on the floor, building furniture a few minutes after the health inspector left having just given us the green light to open for business. After months of being told we needed to wait, or that we needed to build a sink and tear up the floor, etc., to get approval, it was so weird to have the freedom to just open the door and run our business. There was nobody stopping us. One of us said, "so they're just going to let us do this now?!" 😅

Fast forward to Tuesday of this week, when we got a message saying our building sign was ready. Go figure, the day Noble Neon Studio could come out to install the sign they had made for us was July 30, Street Cheese's one-year soft-iversary.

So it took us one year to get a real sign for the building! We'll have it for the anniversary of our official grand opening on September 30--which is also the 6-year anniversary of Street Cheese's formation as a business. 🥳

Thanks to everyone who has come in to buy cheese, charcuterie, accompaniments, plates, platters, and all the things over the past year. We can't wait to keep sharing delicious food with you, and we are excited that more folks might find us now that there's physical evidence on the outside of the building that cheese is on the inside. 🧀

🍓 Berry and stone fruit season is upon us! 🍑 Our favorite way to eat these seasonal fruit is mixed in with a little burrata or fresh ricotta, which we have a surplus of both right now! 🤤

🐮 Lioni cow’s milk Burrata Con Panna (fresh mozzarella stuffed with cream and mozzarella shreds)

🐃 Lioni 100% grass-fed Water Buffalo Basket Ricotta (Tangy, smooth, bright and addicting)

🐮 Bellwether Farms Whole Milk Hand Dipped Basket Ricotta from California (absolute delicacy, creamy, fluffy- our forever favorite ricotta)

All three of these options topped with fresh berries, stone fruit or even a locally made preserve will be the perfect summertime snack.

Also, if you have some fresh tomatoes that need eating, grab the Lioni Fresh Bufala Mozzarella to make the perfect caprese salad 🍅

Come into the shop and ask us about the other super seasonal cheeses that you dont want to miss out on, as summer is flying by! ☀️

The second half of our summer events calendar is live! It's jam packed with cheese tasting and education. 👌

Our Cheese 101 class sold out immediately when our newsletter subscribers got first notice, so we added a second class to the lineup for everyone else asking to join.

Tickets are available through our online store (see link below). If you try to find an event and it doesn't show up, that will mean it has sold out.

We will be sharing a few off-site events as we roll into August, so keep your eyes peeled for those. 👀

We'll also share details about our anniversary party as we get closer to September. It will be the store's 1st anniversary and the business' 6th anniversary!

Hot Cheese Happy Hour is still every Thursday from 3-6pm, although we are switching things up once a month with a Cheese Club Release party/happy hour, and we may be planning to sub in a different type of hot cheese a few weeks in August. 🤭

We're looking forward to getting cheesy with y'all! 🧀🫶
