Leschi Market

Leschi Market Family owned and operated. Seattle's biggest little grocer, come see for yourself! In 1948, they decided to move their business to the Leschi community.

In the early 40s, Hank and Shirley Edelson owned a small grocery store on the SW corner of 22nd Ave and East Union Street. Shirley's father owned a dry cleaners at the south end of the same building where the meat department currently resides. Over the next 20 years, with the growth of the neighborhood, Leschi Market went through an extensive remodel in 1967 to increase the size of the store to wh

at it is today. Leonard Shulman came to work at the business for his uncle-in-law, Hank Edelson, and Hank's son, Danny, in 1962 as a second job. His main job at the time was working for the Great Northern Railroad as a telegrapher. In 1967, after the remodel, Hank asked Leonard to become the manager, so Leonard left the railroad. In 1977, Leonard along with his wife Betty Lou and son John, bought the store from Danny. With the retirement of a butcher in the mid 80's, Leonard and Betty Lou's oldest son Steve came to work at the business as a butcher. In 1996, John decided to move on and leave the family business. Soon after John left the business Steve decided to expand the wine department to what it is today. Currently, Leschi Market is run by the three generations: Leonard, his son Steve and grandson Yousef. Leschi Market is truly a part of the community. We regularly support our local food banks. In partnership with our wonderful customers, we donated over 250 hams to our local food banks during the 2008 holiday season. We currently have a food bank program that allows our customers to make monetary donations so we can buy chicken at cost to donate to our local food banks. Leschi Market also sponsors annual fundraisers to benefit the Central Area Senior Center, the Southeast Seattle Senior Center and the Lakewood-Seward Park Neighborhood Association. Every year we donate over 50 smoked/cooked turkeys to fundraising events at schools and other organizations. Leschi Market has changed over the years with a wide variety of natural and organic products. We have a great meat and deli department, specializing in homemade sausage, smoked turkey and organic roasted chicken. Our produce department offers some of the freshest organic and conventional produce available. The store may look small but we carry a little of everything in organic, natural and conventional products. Leschi Market is proud to be your grocery store and a part of the Leschi community.

On behalf of our Leschi Market and Bluwater Bistro at Leschi we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our friend Joy Hollingsworth for her tireless dedication in resolving the parking situation. We also warmly thank the Mayor’s Office for reaching out, offering an apology, and supporting us. We’re grateful that the lots are reopened. Beginning in July, we will be working in coordination with the city to discuss the next stages of the project. Most importantly, we want to thank our friends, family, and the entire community for standing behind us. This truly shows what community support can achieve.

Update & Thank You — Leschi Market Construction

Dear Friends and Customers,

I want to share an important update on the construction taking place across the street from Leschi Market, and most importantly, to say thank you.

Because of this community, the City received over 900 emails regarding the impact on Leschi Market and surrounding businesses. That kind of response is truly incredible, and it made a real difference. We are deeply grateful to everyone who took the time to speak up.

I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Joy Hollingsworth for her responsiveness and for helping bring the right people together to begin addressing these concerns. Her engagement has been meaningful during this process.

Here is where things currently stand:

Work on a portion of the parking lot will continue through the end of next week. However, the lot is expected to be open this weekend, which should help improve access in the short term.

The larger project has now been postponed until mid to late August, giving us valuable time to work toward a better plan.

We will be participating in meetings beginning at the end of July to focus on how to minimize the impact on local businesses and maintain access during construction.

While the situation is not fully resolved, we are in a much better position today because of your voices.

Thank you again for standing with us. Your continued support, whether through shopping with us or simply spreading the word, truly makes a difference.

Dear Friends and Customers,

I don’t usually send messages like this, but today I have no choice.

This morning, without any notice, construction began directly in front of Leschi Market as part of the project to rebuild the Leschi South Marina. The parking lot was closed, access to the store is already being restricted, and we have been told this may continue through the summer. We are also being told that some of the already limited parking directly in front of our store will be removed temporarily as part of this work.

For us, this is not just an inconvenience. It is a crisis.

Leschi Market has been serving this community since 1948. For nearly 80 years, and across four generations, we have been here for you. Today, we are asking you to be here for us.

Summer is what keeps our doors open for the rest of the year. With parking gone and access limited, and now the temporary loss of additional front of store parking, we are facing a situation that could put us out of business.

This affects more than just one store. We have about thirty employees who depend on this business to support themselves and their families. Other nearby businesses, including BluWater Bistro and others in the Leschi area, are facing the same reality.

We understand that rebuilding the Leschi South Marina is an important investment in our community and waterfront. However, the way this phase has been implemented, without notice and without a clear plan to preserve access, is putting long standing local businesses at serious risk.

We are asking the City to pause this portion of the project until a workable solution can be found that allows construction to move forward while keeping local businesses accessible.

WE NEED YOUR VOICE

Please take one minute right now to send an email to the City. It truly can make the difference.

I am a customer of Leschi Market and part of the Leschi community.

I am very concerned about the project to rebuild the Leschi South Marina and the impact it is having on Leschi Market and surrounding businesses.

Closing parking and restricting access during the summer, along with the temporary loss of front of store parking, puts these long standing businesses at serious risk of closing.

This project began without notice, and I am asking that it be paused so the City can work with local businesses on a solution that allows them to remain open.

Thank you.

Every email matters. The more people who speak up, the more likely the City is to act.

Thank you for standing with us.
