Haven’t posted in a while, so just need to catch up. It’s been almost 5 months, we are getting so much produce. Really we over-planted in a panic to make sure we would get by in case the world ended. But thankfully that didn’t happen.
And I cut, raked, baled, and stacked 385 bales of hay during June, so didn’t spend as much time in the garden as usual, but thankfully April took over a lot of the management, and Kelly and Jason did a lot of weeding and harvesting and clean-up.
We just had a Fall Garden planning meeting (very fun, we’ll do that more often) to decide what to put in for the next few months. And now we are collecting seeds and starts and getting ready for round 2! Succession planting will be key, and keeping quantity reasonable. But also looking forward to fun stuff we don’t have yet, like celery, purple carrots, more spinach, Brussels sprouts and leeks. And all our squash, pumpkins, melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, and sunflowers should be coming in during fall, and some cauliflower and broccoli real soon. And so much zucchini... too much... anyone want some?
So the peas were bountiful but we didn’t love the snowpeas, but they were better as shelling peas, but I didn’t know there is a limited time while they are sweet and then get starchy. Jason and April cleared the bed this week. We will do a fall planting very soon.
And even though we planted many rounds of lettuce, they all bolted at various times, and had to be pulled, but we left a couple to flower for the bees. Same with spinach, and cilantro, all bolted. So we’ll plant more but trying a less sunny spot that might be better.
I’ve never grown watermelon radishes but they are really huge, and I seeded them way too close together, and didn’t use nematodes, so they are pretty ugly. But I think they have pretty tasty greens, basically they are turnips. So looking forward to a better balanced Fall garden.

Got Zucs! And lots of peas. And generally a lot of veg. Good thing we have a lot of family to give to, and selling a few things just to help offset costs.
Switching out the row covers for netting on almost everything. Just using covers for seedlings.
Hay cutting is competing for my time, so just doing basic upkeep in the garden for a couple weeks.

Tomorrow the COVID-19 garden will be 11 weeks old, seems like it’s been much longer. We do spend a lot of time tending the garden, harvesting, planting, watering, covering and uncovering, every day! But, the end result is so much production we have plenty for family and started selling some online. We also bought some 24x16x12 tubs that fit nicely in the garage fridge, and also some rolls of plastic bags and rubber bands. And we are field washing with some water tubs to soak veggies in and then it just goes straight into a tub and into the fridge to stay fresh and crisp.
Direct seeded a lot of green beans, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, watermelon, carrots, spinach, cilantro, and even some stuff I would normally transplant like cauliflower, eggplant, and kale. Weather has been hot, then cool, then hot again, so doing a lot of hand-watering (mostly April doing that) to keep seeds from drying out. Also Kelly did a lot of weeding, since they grow fast right now.
Harvesting snap peas and snow peas every few days now, got 2 lbs on a 3-day growth of snow peas last week. Also a few beets sized up early so picking about a dozen each week, but lots more on the way. Most of the lettuce bolted, so pulled all the mature plants and stripped leaves, washed and into bags and tubs. Have too much lettuce now, but will be less for next few weeks, but more is growing. Same for arugula, cilantro, radishes, spinach, and Bok Choi is done completely. But the warm weather is about to give us zucchini, and possibly green beans and cucumbers by end of June. Maybe some early tomatoes too!
Oh, and we still have ticks in the grass. So annoying.

Potato bed started too. Dud out a sandy bed, put a layer of compost in first, added fertilizer and amendments, lots of wood ash, and put sandy soil back over. Punch a hole down into the sandy soil to bottom and drop the potato starts in. Leave hole open, it will fill in slowly and hill the potatoes.

Kens COVID Garden, weeks 7 and 8 update. Harvest, harvest, plant more, plant more. Lots of activity in week 7 because the weather was great, and full moon helped speed up everything. But in week 8 we had a few days of rain, much cooler temps, and no moon, so everything slowed down.
However we just got some snap peas finally! And tons of chard, lettuce, baby kale, mustard greens, and some cilantro and radishes.
Direct seeded a bunch of green beans just before the rain, but maybe it’s still bit cool, the germination has been spotty. Will add more seed this week. Also we planted out as many seedlings as we could (herbs, basil, lettuce, tomatillos, cucumber, kale, fennel, cauliflower and broccoli), and did succession planting on cilantro, arugula, spinach, radishes, and carrots. But, it’s still a bit cool so cucs and zuchs are barely growing. Next week will be warmer so will plant out all squash, pumpkins, and melons. We 16 beds now at 20-ish feet, and 3 long beds around 75 feet. But so far all the harvest came from first 5 beds.

COVID garden update for weeks 5 & 6. I guess we started on March 25, and it’s May 6 now, and we’ve harvested a lot already, more than I expected. Lots of lettuce, chard, spinach, arugula, radishes, mustard greens, bok Choi, baby kale, and probably more that I’m forgetting. Enough to share with family. Thanks very much to April doing most of the harvesting and watering, and Kelly for getting all the starts, seeds, and supplies.
Last week we built a big trellis system for the peas, and added a couple beds with more greens and lettuce, more onions, radishes, cabbage, bok Choi, etc. zucchini got its own big bed, so will be nice to have it easy to access for harvesting. Also got 3000ft of drip tape and got every bed irritated.
Just yesterday I started direct seeding summer crops like green beans, because it should be warm enough. Squirrels got a lot of my bigger seeds like squash, watermelon, and cucumber, but a few made it and most are planted out now. So now I just need more beds to plant summer crops like corn, beans, melon, maybe a few more peppers and tomatoes. We have gaps, like we are missing broccoli, kinda light on kale, and could use a lot more arugula and spinach, but still there is plenty. Bok Choi is mostly bolting, and some spinach and mustard bolted too. But it’s ok since we need space so we’ll just put something else in its place, like broccoli!

4 weeks into the garden and it’s really taking off! Just getting the first few radishes, and regularly harvesting lettuce every few days. Spinach is ready, got a bit of arugula and baby kale, and baby chard.
So the annoying squirrels still got most of the seedlings that had large seeds, like squash, cucumber, and melons. I had to unwrap them since they were not getting sufficient light and air under the wrapping, and i was not diligent in rewrapping them in the evening. But it’s warm enough now direct seed, so will stop trying to do seedlings for that stuff and just do periodic lettuce, kale, fennel, cauliflower, etc.
Put in more onions in the last open bed, which is the 6th bed that is 3x25 or so. Will be transplanting greens and broccoli there too. Should be making new beds this weekend.

COVID19 2020 garden update, 2 weeks in. We already harvested some lettuce from the transplants, thanks April!
Pretty much all the direct seeded crops sprouted, except for the older seeds. I really should just toss out all seed over 2 years old.
I also just put in drip tape, April said it was taking 45 mins or more to hand-water everything, and we keep planting more and more. Green house is slow to grow, I think it’s a bit cool in there with all the overcast and rainy weather. Restarted everything that the squirrels ate, so far the upside down trays as covering, and frost fabric wrap, is keeping them out.

SQUIRREL!!!
Small setback in the greenhouse, a squirrel ate the seedlings. Got all the squash, cucumbers, and watermelon. Squash had nice root already. Will try again and cover the seedlings with trays upside down and frost cloth, hopefully it’s good enough. If not, I may just do direct seeding instead.

COVID-19 garden 2020 is started. Seems like a lot of folks are feeling like starting a garden is a good idea with the global pandemic and potential future problems with getting safe food. But, it’s still going to be 4-6 weeks before we harvest anything due to cool weather. But it’s Spring and it’s a good time to start.
Many thanks to Kelly for getting seedlings and supplies from Harmony Farm Supply for us, it will be a shared garden this year between us, Kelly, and April, and hopefully will be enough to give to family and friends too.
So, in the ground as of today we have 30 mixed lettuce starts, 12 spinach starts, 6 chard starts, 6 bok Choi, 4 parsley, 50 walla walla onion starts, 2 tomatoes (which survived two frosty mornings due to a heavy plastic cover), and we direct seeded radishes, arugula, mixed kales, mixed greens, beets, chard, spinach, cilantro, and today April and I put in a whole bunch of peas. Some seed is from 2017, so maybe not great germination, we’ll see.
Beds are about 6 inches of compost over top of last year’s beds, amended with 7-5-7 organic fertilizer, some wood ash from our wood stove, a bit of powdered sulfur and a pinch of potassium sulfate 50-0-0. Need to get some calcium in there soon as well.
In the green house we’ve got mixed squash and zucchini, lots more lettuce, kale, basil, parsley, and fennel. Will keep making more flats until the green house is full.
