At Peter's Pumpkins and Carmen's Corn, we usually plowed our fields first to break up and turn over the soil. This buries old crop residue and weeds, loosens compacted ground, and brings fresh nutrients to the surface.
Then the fields are disced to break the large clumps into smaller pieces and smooth the soil. That helps seeds get good soil contact, improves planting accuracy, and gives crops a better start growing.
