Over the years, we've spent countless evenings gathered around campfires with family, friends, and church groups. There is something special about a crackling fire, glowing coals, and perfectly toasted marshmallows that brings people together. To us, marshmallows are more than a sweet treat—they're about connection, laughter, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
Some of my favorite childhood memories are of visiting my grandparents, Jay and Cleo Rowley on Milton Street. Every visit, I knew exactly where to find my favorite treat: toasted coconut marshmallows tucked away in the top drawer beside the cookies and wheat bread. They became part of our treasured moments together.
During the COVID pandemic, I discovered those marshmallows were no longer being made. I missed not only the flavor but also the memories they represented. So I decided to develop my own. After plenty of experimenting, I created a toasted coconut marshmallow that I loved even more than the original—and today it's still one of Marco Mallo's most popular flavors.
With the help of my husband and our seven kids (who proudly serve as our official taste testers), we began creating even more flavors. Everyone has a favorite—lemon meringue, double chocolate, cotton candy—but toasted coconut will always be mine because every bite reminds me of my grandparents.
Selling at the Shelley Farmers Market has become a family tradition, too. Our kids help make and sell marshmallows, earning money for their activities while learning the value of hard work, responsibility, and serving others. Stop by our booth and say hello—my son may have a joke, if you ask!
