The past week we have planted a new fig tree, some garlic sprouts, and re-potted a sweet acacia tree given by our late grandmother, originally planted in a place that ended up with very limited space & light. It will wait a year before it gets a more permanent home. Meanwhile, got a dwarf mulberry tree to plant before digging half-moons around all these trees to prepare for planting crops.

Last week had little done due to sickness, but we're back to work. So far, have transplanted a new almond tree, dug holes for more trees, and transplanted more Egyptian walking onions. Immediate future plans include planting more fruit & shade trees in more half-moon set-ups, transplanting garlic plants that sprouted around the yard, and cutting back some berry vines because they had been neglected for several years. Also began harvesting asparagus, green onions, & herbs. Strawberries may be very soon.

New project I've started for the yard, inspired by some videos I've watched about humanitarian programs in the Sahel countries of Africa to stem the expansion of the Sahara Desert. This half-moon shape depression would collect rainwater during the monsoon seasons, the single tree in the center of a "horseshoe" would hold the moisture for the rest of the plants in the horseshoe and provide shade in the hot Arizona sun. The video showed an 8-year progress in a part of Niger which an orchard of these shapes restored the region's natural aquifers. For my future food forest, this will be the first of over a dozen to dot the yard give a decent support for the overall project. This half-moon will hold an elm tree (given by a neighbor), Egyptian walking onions, and two types of culinary sage

For the past year in 2025, we had taken a hiatus from the farmers markets to try & improve our gardens in our attempt to make our food forest a reality. However, the whole year was rife with setback after setback, resulting in just about no progress whatsoever. This year finally brought about some respite with new ideas and new designs for our food forest plans, and so far, seems to show some results. However, there is still so much to do, and requires more time. So we are taking one more year away from markets until we are finally capable of producing crops on a year-long regular basis for both local farmers markets and local stores. We will try to provide regular updates and some pictures of our progress.
