Shelburne Farms Wow!

Snuck out for a quick weekend in Vermont recently and discovered Shelburne Farms!

This National Historic Landmark was owned by the Vanderbilt family during The Gilded Age and is now a working 1,400 acre farm and environmental education center.

There is an onsite dairy and bakery and you can walk the beautiful grounds. It blew my mind!

So much fun to discover new farms when you travel!

Standard size (for 1-2 people) veggie only and fruit only Farm-to-Family Harvest (CSA) boxes out for delivery today and tomorrow!

Packing days are organized, fun, chaos…we have 10+ people in the barn all being busy bees…moving produce, packing produce, palleting boxes, stacking and unloading and loading and then it all comes together and peace reigns once again and we feel very accomplished about doing an honest days work.

Austin Family Farm potatoes dug this morning!

Nutrient density is a big benefit for making the effort to support local farms! Harvest to table can be as little as 1-2 days!

After a fruit or vegetable is picked, it respirates during storage and travel and while cold storage reduces the rate of respiration, it does not eliminate it.

Vitamins live in the water that is respirated, so it is best to consume fruits and veggies as soon as possible after harvest.

Unless you are buying locally grown produce in your supermarket, it can often be weeks old by the time you are shopping for it.

The pretty, bright red imported tomatoes that look so perfect and healthy are usually picked green (reduced nutrients) and then artificially ripened and colored up using ethylene gas in a controlled environment.

Buy local and keep it fresh!
