Hudson Heritage Farms, LLC Hudson Heritage Farms is a multi-species livestock farm located in the Elmo area of Halifax County.

Hudson Heritage Farms is a veteran owned and operated multi-species livestock farm located in the Elmo area of Halifax County. We are interested in the perpetuation of Heritage Breeds of Livestock raised in harmony with other traditional breeds. Our farm produces Scottish Highland Cattle, Horned Dorset Sheep, various breeds of Swine, Boer Goats, various breeds of Poultry and free-range eggs. Our f

arm proudly exercises sustainable agricultural practices, and strives to raise the healthiest animals possible by providing a natural stress-free environment. Our cattle, sheep, goats and hogs are pasture-raised, grazing on open pasture throughout the year and fed hay as needed in the winter months. Our chickens and swine are pasture-raised as well, and given appropriate amounts of grains to ensure proper health and growth. Our herds and flocks are grazed in an Intensive Rotational Grazing system to ensure that they are eating only from lush, tender pasture, which is grown from soils receiving only natural amendments such as compost, green manures and minerals. All of our livestock are raised naturally without hormones, steroids, unnecessary antibiotics or additives. Because of this, we believe that you will find our meat to be a more pure, fresh and flavorful. We do all this for the health and best interests of our animals, and our customers. We are members of Virginia Grown, Virginia's Finest, and Home Grown by Heroes Programs. Our meats can be purchased at the Halifax Farmers' Market, Farm Direct by appointment, and at the Halifax-South Boston Visitors Center.

Standing in the pasture this morning at sunrise.

You can tell it's hunting season. The local venison mixes in with our cows and goats. They have no reason to fear me as I quit killing things several years ago.

A new baby cow this morning. Looks healthy and happy although mom's a bit nervous.

Our article about our recent trip to Mexico has been published in the local newspaper.

The visit to the Copper Canyon was well worth the journey. After David completed his fishing trip he did a stopover in Mexico City for 24 hours.

He enjoyed his short stay and discovered there was much more to do and see than he had realized.

Historic buildings and large cathedrals abound.

The city has a large Lebanese community and Lebanese food was a change from what he had been eating.

We may return for a short visit.

After Day one there was Day Two….Fishing was good in the morning many fish were caught with the scales showing two over 8 pounds!!

After tacos and frozen margaritas for lunch they were back out on the water. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be…Only a few small bass were landed.

The afternoon brought steady fishing. Upon arrival at the lodge met by local village children in Halloween costumes.

Day Two was in the books with David’s 10 pounder still the top fish!

A hero lives amongst us -
With Veterans Day approaching, the public is invited to meet a distinguished Veteran residing in our community and hear about his extraordinary life as he reveals his memoir book, If I dream it – I can build it. The event will take place on October 23rd at 5:30 pm, at the historic Elmo Grocery, 6247 Birch Elmo Road in Elmo. This is a free community event hosted by Veterans,David and Denise Hudson, with light snacks and beverages provided. All community members are welcome to attend. RSVP is requested for planning purposes, [email protected].
In 1968, in Vietnam, during an intense battle to save the lives of 550 American soldiers on a hilltop, Donald Marx, an Air Force forward air controller, drew upon enormous inner strengths and uncommon valor. As a result of his heroism, he was awarded the Air Force Cross, and is a member of the Legion of Valor. Membership to the Congressionally chartered Legion of Valor is open only to those awardees of the Medal of Honor or one of the Services highest awards for extraordinary heroism in combat, such as the Air Force Cross.
Halifax County resident Donald Marx has always dreamed of leaving the world a better place, and aside from his military services, he did it over and over in many fields including engineering, aviation and aerospace, information technologies, and other fields, and continues to do so at age 82. He has a message for all of us, “If you dream it, you can build it.” Come to Elmo on October 23rd and meet this humble Veteran.

Today is one of those sad days as a farmer. Animals grow old and they pass on to animal heaven.

Humi short for Humidor ( as in cigar humidor) was the only registered/documented goat we have ever had on Hudson Heritage Farms.

He was a registered Myotonic goat ( also known as a Tennessee Fainting Goat).

He sired hundreds of kids in his lifetime here on the farm and introduced the fainting goat line into the genetics of our stock.

He was an interesting goat and he will be missed.

Maybe we will meet again in the after life. Like Humi I am also growing old.
