Mid‑Winter Reassurance for Beekeepers

• Dead bees outside the hive are normal, and often a good sign the colony is active inside.
• Some dead bees inside the hive are normal, too — the cluster may simply be too cold to clean them out.
• Small numbers = normal; large piles = something to assess later when temperatures rise.
• A gentle knock may prompt a buzz, but use sparingly, as it can stress the cluster.
• A buzz near the top of the hive may indicate that stores are running low — they may need emergency feed once weather permits.
