If you've bought eggs from the grocery store lately, you've probably noticed a variety of marketing terms. One of the most common hype terms is "Cage-free eggs"; but what does Cage-Free really mean?...not much. "Cage-Free, simply means that the factory-farm doesn't keep their hens in individual cages. They are still confined to large barns where the factory farms inhumanely crowd as many chickens as they can fit onto the floor. Because they never even see the sun, they cannot produce Vitamin D. Because they cannot engage in normal chicken behaviors such as chasing bugs and scratching in the ground for seeds, they generally live a very short, stressed life. When compared to store-bought eggs, with fancy sounding marketing terms printed on the cartons, our local free-range farm eggs are richer in color, yolk density, nutrition, freshness, flavor and satisfaction that you are supporting humanely treated, ethically raised chickens.
