🐢 A turtle's shell is a vital part of a their anatomy and defacing it can endanger a turtle’s health and ability to survive. Did you know their shells have blood vessels, which help absorb vitamins and heat from the sun?

Help protect turtles by leaving them in their natural form and habitat. Please, do not paint or engrave them. If you see a turtle in the road, help it cross safely to the side in which it was traveling. And, please, do not keep turtles as pets.

Did you know that it's normal for a fawn to be by itself during the day? Mom is nearby, but out of sight! With so few deer rehabilitators in Virginia, and increasing restrictions due to the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease, it's more important than ever to keep fawns wild and to share how to NOT be a fawn-napper!

Meet Hobo. Hobo was eating bugs in a person's lawn, so they decided to call an exterminator. Pesticide was sprayed on the lawn and under the house. Six weeks later he was brought to us emaciated, lacking aggression and covered in ant bites. A few days of a nutritious diet, meds, and hydration has him up on his feet. Sadly it looks as though our smelly friend has some lasting neurological damage from the chemicals sprayed, and cannot walk or run without falling over. He can no longer hunt for food and would die if released. Skunks, birds, armadillo, possum and many others are at the mercy of those who spray toxic chemicals to kill bugs. When contemplating pest control, please think of Hobo and his friends that will die alongside those grubs and grasshoppers.

We are reaching peak bird migration in many parts of the United States. Remember to dim your lights for birds at night.

Artificial light is scattered across the landscape of the entire country, and birds are frequently attracted to building lighting, especially during inclement weather events during migration. Unfortunately, lights can cause confusion, disorientation, and exhaustion - directly impacting their ability to migrate. This simple act of turning off or dimming lights, can help save the lives of birds as they traverse across the country.

It's not ill-eagle, but dimming your lights isn't a birden. BOOM! We got bird migrations jokes!

Happy !
Some states are starting to see caterpillars, so it’s a perfect time for a caterpillar identification refresh! Monarch caterpillars have a few look-alikes, making it more difficult to identify different species. Pictured are a black swallowtail caterpillar, a queen caterpillar, and a monarch caterpillar. An easy way to tell a queen and monarch apart is by the number of filaments. Monarchs have two sets, whereas queens have three. To differentiate between black swallowtails and monarchs, note the dots in the black swallowtail’s pattern versus the stripes of monarchs.

What are your go-to ways of identifying caterpillars?
