The Springfield Food Co-op is a member-owned natural foods grocery store serving the area in and around Springfield, Vermont. It has operated successfully since 1992, providing its members and the region with a complete line of wholesome foods and consumer products that encourage a healthy lifestyle and minimum impact on the environment. The Co-op purchases a variety of local products and fosters connections with many area farmers and suppliers to encourage a sustainable economy.

Our Co-op has always had a bulk section, all the way back to its founding in 1992! While products and offerings have changed over time, the basic idea has always been the same: offer solid products at a discounted price, sold by weight. Empty mason jars have proved a timeless addition for us: You can still purchase and use them in our Bulk section!

Funny enough, the "bulk" section of grocery stores used to be... the entire store. For much of the 1800s and early 1900s, an American general store would have looked surprisingly familiar if you ignored the lack of plastic bins. Staples (such as: flour, sugar, coffee, oatmeal, beans, grains, spices, etc.) were commonly shipped to stores in barrels, sacks, crates, or large containers. The customer would ask for an amount, and the storekeeper would scoop or measure it out and weigh it on a scale.
