Tips to pick the right pumpkin:
Identifying the Right Time to Harvest Pumpkins
The skin should be hard and resist puncture from your fingernail. Also, listen for a hollow sound when you tap it lightly. It should be hard and start to look dry. The pumpkin itself should be fully colored, whether orange, white, or another variety. Techniques for Cutting and Handling
To avoid damaging the pumpkins, use a sharp knife or pruning shears. Cut the stem, leaving about 3 to 4 inches attached. This stem acts as a barrier against bacteria and fungi, helping the pumpkin last longer. Never yank or twist the pumpkin off the vine, as this can harm the fruit and the plant. Handle pumpkins carefully to avoid bruising. Carry them like a basketball, not by the stem. Wearing gloves can protect your hands while handling. Clean off any soil with a brush and consider curing your pumpkins in a warm, dry place for about 10 days. For long-term storage, keep them in a cool, dry environment. Storing pumpkins correctly can prevent rot and prolong their usability,
making them perfect for later carving or cooking.
