The rural plains of Stanley, New Mexico are situated midway between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, on the eastern side of the Sandia Mountains. Atop a grassy hill surrounded by large ranches, the Daeschel family drilled wells, installed a windmill, planted an orchard and erected several greenhouses.
The Daeschels soon discovered that the demand for their annuals, perennials, herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables at local farmers markets was strong, consuming nearly all they could produce in a season. That’s how it began, and how it continues today. High quality plants, lovingly and locally raised and distributed by three generations of the Daeschel family.
In 2017, Cole Daeschel took up the mantle of leadership of the family business. With the support of his wife, Colleen, his children and his business partner, Will Houser; Cedar Grove is not only continuing but expanding the operations. It has been a busy year updating equipment around the farm as well as purchasing a new truck and plant trailer. Cole has expanded Cedar Grove’s already busy vending schedule to include four markets: the Santa Fe Farmers Market on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s, the Los Alamos Farmers Market on Thursday’s and the new Eldorado Farmers Market on Friday.
And to top it off Cole and Will have constructed a fourth greenhouse but with a twist. The new sunken greenhouse will allow them to more sustainably using thermal ballasts and geothermal energy to heat the space.
