Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus

Today’s Passage:
Hebrews 12:1–2
“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Following Christ takes endurance. There are sins that trip us up, and there are other things that simply weigh us down. Hebrews tells us to lay both aside so we can keep running the race God has placed before us.

There is also encouragement in the lives of those who came before us. Hebrews 11 is filled with people who trusted God through hardship, waiting, and loss. Their lives remind us that God can be trusted, but our eyes are ultimately fixed on Jesus.

Jesus faced the suffering and shame of the cross and did not turn away from what the Father had given Him to do. He endured because of the joy set before Him, and now He sits at the right hand of God.

So when distractions begin to pull our attention away, we have a clear place to turn. Instead of focusing on what is holding us back, we look again to Jesus. We may not know everything that is ahead, but we know who is worth following all the way to the end.

Let’s pray,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us and shown us that You can be trusted. We confess that we often carry weights and sins that slow us down and trip us up. Give us the strength to lay them aside and help us run the race You have set before us with patience and endurance. Forgive us for the times we fix our attention on our circumstances, our failures, or our fears instead of Christ. Help us keep our eyes firmly on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, and remember how faithfully He endured what was set before Him. We love You and praise You, and ask all this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
