Does this beautiful weather have you dreaming of your favorite seasonal treats? Want to save 10% all summer long on organically grown produce and high-quality local goodies? Check out Pine Root’s “Farm Share Program” to see if it’s a good idea for your family!

Our full-service farm stand is open 7 days a week, mid-June through the end of October. We grow over 100 varieties of veggies, flowers, and herbs, and curate a selection of the best products our neighbors have to offer, including sourdough bread, eggs, goat cheese, hummus, sauerkraut, honey, maple syrup, pickles, jams, & more!

Sign up on our website www.pinerootfarm.com or by clipping our ad in the June 3rd edition of Your Weekly Shopping Guide.

How it works:

By joining our Farm Share Program you are giving the farm much needed start-up funds in the lean months of spring, and in return your family enjoys a 10% discount on local, fresh produce from a trusted source. For example, Ms. Sweet Pea buys a $90 farm share in April, and the farmer credits her account $100. Ms. Pea can then shop at the farm stand all season long, any day of the week, for whatever she wants, without money, and the farmer records it on her account.

Our Farm Shares are designed to be more flexible than traditional Community Supported Agriculture memberships: there are no pick-up dates to miss, no worries about wasting a veggie you don't like or get too much of, and the program even includes fresh bread, eggs, and all the other products we buy in from local producers. You can recharge your account at any time, and at the end of the season any unused value will be donated to our Prescriptions for Produce Program.

Being a member of the Farm Share Program comes with an additional perk: free cut-your-own herbs and flowers! Families who have participated report that kids eat more veggies from "their farm", and members and farmers alike appreciate the close relationships the program grows.

Thank you for considering supporting us in this way!

Experimenting with strip tilling in field #4 this year. Instead of putting under the entire cover crop, we tilled only where our beds would go, leaving the clover and rye to continue growing in the paths and working their soil-health magic.

Did you know that the 1940 Super C tractor has a snack bar mounted to the left of the steering column? It’s the perfect spot for locally baked donuts or other similarly shaped goods, and gets a lot of use during field prep season.

Lots of exciting things happened today, but planting sunflowers was the most fun! Happy May Day, and as always a huge thank you to our crews (past, present, & future)!

Mini greenhouse tour with Monkey... Things are looking pretty good. The vast majority of our work in here is done, we'll do a couple more successions of sweet corn, sunflowers, and get the first batch of cucurbits going, but first we have to get some of these babies into the ground to make some space!

We transplant some hardier crops into the field in early May, but we wait until after May 15th (when hopefully most of the frost danger is behind us), before risking tomatoes, peppers, flowers, etc. We definitely don't mind missing out on being the first to market if it means we can sleep a bit more soundly on cold nights!

Plants & babies, two of our favorite things 😍😍😍

We’ve been digging and dividing perennial flowers and herbs this week… stay tuned for a modest plant sale in May.

Some of the herbs will be distributed to local nonprofits, if you would like to volunteer time towards this effort, reach out!

This morning, Juni & I worked on crop plans and made Valentine’s Day cards for her classmates. We spent the afternoon volunteering at Food for All, bagging dry beans and laughing with other volunteers and their children.

Also today, 17 people were detained in Skowhegan on their way to work at Backyard Farms. We have been told by some of our elected leaders that this kind of thing is being “ramped down” or no longer happening in Maine, but it still is. We may not be seeing the same kind of violence as Minneapolis, but tearing families apart like this, and subjecting them to so much trauma on top of what they have already experienced before coming to Maine, is an incredibly violent act.

You can do a lot to help. Join a local mutual aid group, volunteer with an organization like Food for All, donate if you can and reach out to those in your network who can also donate. Remind your elected leaders about what is actually happening in our state and how you feel about it. We’re all connected, we rise together and fall together, let’s stand up for and with our neighbors and demand a safer Maine free from this kind of violence.

Our raffle via donation is still active, so if you'd like to be entered to win a $200 farm share, send us a screenshot of your donation to a group like the ones listed below. Every $10 is one chance, drawing will be on Feb 28th.

Here’s an incomplete list of organizations you can direct your efforts towards, please add more in the comments. Thank you!
